Watch your DPI when you scan them, and what the overall size is (inches/pixels), then reduce afterwards.
I always scan at 300 dpi. For something with THIS much detail I'd let your largest side be 1000-1200 pixels wide. Something smaller or less significant I set 750-900 pixels.
