Desire can be painful and counterproductive. But without it we cannot live, or thrive. Like a riding horse, its power must be properly directed if you want to go anywhere. It should not a master or enemy, but a constant companion through life, if sometimes an annoying one.
This is a good personification (theriomorphism?) of want. It's almost poetic.
