This is pretty funny...although there is an easy explanation. Just invent fictional, non-sentient animals to fill the roles that real life animals would normally fill. Like for example, in the game Solatorobo everyone is either a canine or feline of some kind, so they have a fictional cow-like species to provide meat and milk.
