By creating a mental association with the new image and given its connection with something you remember fondly from your past you may as a result also remember the new traumatizing image you encountered later in life due to that association.
Also it's a really over used phrase >_<

Ah, well I can agree to that, but perhaps people who find themselves affected in that way are using the wrong phrase. But it's not as though it's that big of a deal or people actually think long and hard about a short phrase. It still seems like flawed logic to say it ruined your childhood, maybe, at the very most it ruined part of the way you viewed something previously.
It really is.
It really is.
Yeah that too, blah. I just say Transformers fandom because that's the nerdy online fandom I'm part of. If you're old enough to remember the very first cartoon series, then you're pretty much automatically one of those really insane nostalgia crazed people who demand everything be like it was when you were 8 and had poor tastes. The following links sum it up nicely

Nostalgia, and an appreciation of things that sort of set a foundation or whatever are all well and good feelings to have, but its when these feelings lead to a conflicting attitude and lack of reason- then its a bit much D:

I'd say that this is ruining my good vibes of the present, but that has past, as has this comment.
What was I talking about? Never mind then, it's in the past.
time to do what Pumbaa would say and put your past in your behind, or is it your behind in your past? I forget the quote...
Anyways...
Well said *thumbs up*

faving this out of principle but I have an amusing anecdote about this
someone was elaborating to people why saying "raping my childhood" was a terrible, terrible statement in various ways, including the way you said and did a quip on how Optimus Prime was a truck
he got back a gigantic reply on how that idea was dumb since Optimus Prime was a trailer which made his argument moot

Everybody's childhood is safe unless it was corrupted as it happens. Besides, as we grow older and change, we grow OLDER and CHANGE. Stuff happens.
Unless you're into infantilism, let your childhood go.
...unless it was something REALLY cool.

The stuff today is still crap, and actually kids who do see the old stuff usually find it more enjoyable. It's not raping your childhood, but it can certainly rape the franchise which the owners have stopped caring about in exchange for just selling out with lackluster new series that show absolutely no effort. Flash is not an excuse to be lazy, it is a chance to make even more in less time. We shall always finds ways to return to our childhood, especially even more with all the new shit we have to put up with today.
I know shows have always been there to sell out, but they're not even trying anymore. I remember when they could sell toys but still make the show fun, like with Real Ghostbusters. Today, everyone's on card games, which somehow the fate of the universe hinges on who wins a match that lasts for 2 or more hours.
Things have just gone downhill. It can't rape our childhoods, but it's still sad to see how far things have fallen. An old series can always stay golden, but it's successors always seem to come out tarnished from the beginning.

... dude. We grew up in the 80s and early 90s. WHEN EVERY OTHER SHOW WAS BASED AROUND A TOY/FRANCHISE THAT CAME FIRST. My Little Ponies. GI Joe. He-man. GHOSTBUSTERS. All made to sell toys. And really? A lot of those don't hold up when some of us watch them as adults. They're enjoyable for nostalgia purposes, but I can't enjoy them the same way I did when I was younger and had a different mindset.
And also, if you're going to say something like 'The stuff today is still crap, and actually kids who do see the old stuff usually find it more enjoyable.' you're going to need to back that up with some kind of study. You need a citation. Because logic dictates that if that were true, nobody would bother spending money on making new shows when they could just show reruns of the old ones. That'd be less expensive after all. Those card game shows you mentioned? Do you know why there are so many of them? Kids. Like them. They watch them. Then want to have merchandise from them. It started with Pokemon, which I don't think I need to tell you was a HUGE hit. Yu-Gi-Oh? A big enough success with kids that they even released the spin-off series. Kids of today like that kind of formula.
And crap is in the eye of the beholder. YOU may think everything out today is crap, but I can think of a lot of modern kid's cartoons within the last five years that have large fanbases of both children and older fans: Teen Titans, Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, Flapjack, Avatar -- and that's just naming a few.
There were crap shows back then and there were good shows. There are crap shows now, and there are good shows. Many people just tend to look at their past through rose-colored glasses.

I actually liked the shows you named, but they just feel like they're becoming more sparse today. Nick keeps spamming Spongebob like it was their very own Simpsons, few of the classic Cartoon Network shows are still on (even on Boomerang), and basic cable doesn't even have cartoons on afternoons, Sunday mornings, and even weekday mornings are gone. It's hard not to become nostalgic when things keep turning out like this. I may be 23, but I actually hope to write for a cartoon one day. It may seem like a stupid goal, it is in with the idea that I could bring back something good to Saturday mornings, but it's what I want to do.
Sorry to drag this out, I'm just a passionate fan of animated media.

I don't really have any allusions to the stuff I watched as a kid. I knew it was shit, but it was the only thing that was on. There were only 13 stations to choose from before cable became a big deal, and the only cartoons we got were in the afternoons and on Saturday mornings. I put up with a lot because it was that or NOTHING. Tailspin comes to mind especially, that show bored me out of my wits, but it wasn't news so...
I really don't think the ratio of good to bad shows has changed much in the last ten years, there are just a lot more shows to choose from now that there are stations dedicated to childrens shows.

Whatever you do, don't tell that to DCAU fans. "This new Batman cartoon isn't as good as the one that came out over ten years ago! BAWWW!" At least when I watch Brave and the Bold, I am perfectly aware that I am watching a kids show. It's kind of like the people who complain about Michael Bay's overuse of explosions. WHY YES HE IS IN FACT AN ACTION MOVIE DIRECTOR WHAT A SHOCK.

That phrase around here is simply internet jargin now. Just as in every semi-pouplar internet forum will have faggots fighting for "first post"; whenever someone posts pornography of child-hood cartoon characters, someone will exclaim "MY CHILDHOOD!".
It's a statement for those who wish to make a comment without thinking too deeply beforehand.
Also, I've seen people say "MY CHILDHOOD" to pornography of NEW children cartoon characters. The phrase should be, "My child's childhood".

Ahahaha, man, yeah.. I hear you on that. I mean, I dunno, I can understand recoiling in pain because of things conflicting with preeeeecious memories, but saying that one's childhood is ruined because of FUTURE TIMES, well, they've obviously harnessed the power of time travel and are using it for wrong.
My childhood rapes everything, it is never raped. I wish it had raped me a little less when I was an actual child, but these days it seems pretty amusing. Also, pr0n is awesome. I find genuine amusement in going out and digging up what I can find about obscure, random things I used to see when I was a kid.
When I think of the phrase "___ is ruining my childhood", I usually think about the cherishing of a memory of a childhood figure, and then having that memory “overwritten” by a seriously disturbing picture of it.
I’ve had that mental effect tested on me when I was eating breakfast one morning and the radio went,
“How would you like a nice big bowl of cornflakes?” *sound of cornflakes filling the bowl*
“Then with some fresh milk?” *sound of milk flushing into the bowl*
“And a spray of sweet sugar?” *sound of… sugar*
“And then with a big poop on top of it!” *sound of a really… oh I’m not going to describe that*
… Needless to say, I lost my appetite. ;|

"This has ruined my childhood memories" makes sense.
If say you say porn of say Rocko's Modern Life, it could ruin your memories in a sense that whenever you thought of/enjoyed the show, that porn would enter your mind and make you have to turn it off.
But if you leave off the memories, then..*shrug* If I were Doc, I'd totally rape Marty, then go back in the past and stop it from happening so I could have my cake and eat it too C: and not get fat from it..what...am I talking about.

I don't mind the phrase myself, but only if it is used in anyway but being serious. If you see Care Bears porn, or a Rule 34 of Gargoyles, you can laugh and say, "I can't believe someone did this... this looks pretty awesome, tho."
But if someone is offended by someone else's work JUST because of the subject matter, not only is their childhood gone, BUT THEY DON'T HAVE TO LOOK AT IT IF THEY DON'T WANT TO! I cannot believe that people don't get that by now!

So I'm watching the movie, "The Ant Bully", on the Cartoon Network, cuz it's on and I'm banging on a surly unworking computer and can't be arsed to change the channel.
And this ... this is a kid's movie. And there's at least two dick jokes in it. One involves looking at a naked boy. The other ... the other one apparently has a beetle voiced by Rob "Yakko Warner" Paulsen biting a human on his penis.
Plus, there's a lot of ants rubbing their own asses.
So all I can think about is all the porn that this movie could inspire. Or has inspired.
And then I think back to Secret of Nimh, with its blood and gore and mythic kiss.
Fuck your childhood. Just cuz you were 12 doesn't mean it wasn't going on. Welcome to adulthood.
P.S. The worst Indy movie is Temple of Doom, which is only 10% as good as Crystal Skull. Fuck your childhood, again.

Actually, to me, finding particularly good Rule 34's of cartoons I was fond of as a kid actually makes those memories even fonder. c: They also give me further material to stash on my hard disk to preserve those memories... And peruse them at a later date.
Such is thecurse blessing of being a furry.
Such is the
When I read about Transformers being "ruined" I think, "How can you ruin something that was so awful to begin with?"
But then I'm forced to recall that, when it premiered, most people thought Scooby Doo was the worst thing ever to hit Saturday Morning. The times they do change.
On the flip side, I remember the wailing and crying about Loonatics when it premiered. I thought the show was a bad idea, and poorly executed at that, but hardly the downfall of civilization as we know it.
Then again, I remember how my skin crawled when I saw trailers for the CG "Chipmunks" movie. And I remember the Chipmunks from at least two iterations back (when "Dave Seville" was still around).
Ultimately, it doesn't bother me if people whine about updated TV cartoons ruining their childhood. But whining about all the whining strikes me as especially pointless.

It's impossible to ruin your childhood... however, it IS possible to ruin the memory of your childhood.
Okay, let's take Calvin and Hobbes. Let's say they make a basterdized movie of it. Now everytime you look back on your memories of the comic, the movie will be linked to that memory. Thus, the memory of your childhood is tarished.

As you say, there were crap shows then and crap shows now, and personal tastes now and then, too. Some new versions of previously watched things I've personally liked, others not, this goes for fan works as well, and probably depends 50/50 on actual quality and the time I first watched it. :)
All in all it's absolutely nothing to get so terribly worked up over, rather than to go find something you enjoy watching, or making a show of your own that has all the amazing qualities and substance you're looking for.
Now my computer is dying, but I like this. While I have suffered from the ruin-my-childhood syndrome before, I am now cured of such compulsatory behavior and choose whether to associate things or not. Maybe it all boils down to some fear of change, what do I know :)

There's a reason why these sites are called Porn sites. FA is considered one too that "ruins" the childhood image of furry characters. That is, if the person bothers to have the mature filter one AND then look at the adult sections, then the person is responsible for ruining their own childhood only because they are the perverts. But wait, the person can't be a pervert as a kid already if they say the porn they see when they are older ruins the childhood since the only way "to" ruin a childhood is to look at porn at a younger age. Which makes this phrase kind of rendundant when they're old enough to look at porn, and has been looking at other porn before seeing ones that include fictional characters.
