I'm back from my family compound up north again. Yet another thing they have to inspire me is a fairly good stash of old comics collected by my uncles and Dad (and some older cousins), and I can't help noticing that weird obsession those golden or silver-age comic writers had with superpowered gorillas. Or gorillas with human brains in them, gorillas with super-evolved brains, or even (!) superheroes TF'd into gorillas. Where does this great-ape obsession come from?
I don't generally go for primate TFs, but when I do, gorillas are generally my choice. And if I read enough into those old comics, I may start to feel slightly devolved myself.

Supposedly gorilla stories were so popular and numerous in DC comics during the "silver age" an editor had to keep an eye on things to make sure only one comic a month had a gorilla on its cover! I remember when their 'great white hunter' character Congo Bill was given a ring that let him trade minds with a golden gorilla and become...Congorilla!
