"Hff."
Soana breathed deeply as she ascended the mountain. Her paws were dislodging small rocks and pebbles in the dirt and sending them slowly rolling toward the bottom. She turned. It was a long way to the bottom...why was she even here again?
Oh, right...solitude. She had free time, she had to check out the mountain. And with how busy her life was down below, she absolutely needed some calm and quiet. The temple was full of activity right now, and with that were more Leothauns hanging around the temple seeking help or hiring it. She had her paws full. And this was the highest she'd ever climbed, so she was truly just out for a bit of adventure.
Soana looked around as she reached a bit of flat surface. The dirt was soft here, and not rocky at all. Like someone had come through and...raked it all out...hm. She began to walk, looking around through the thin fog. Perhaps there had been a settlement up here at some point? Her parents had certainly never mentioned such a thing! Hrm...actually. If she squinted she could see something in the distance.
Curiosity had the best of her now; she HAD to go see. As she jogged toward it and it got bigger and bigger, she noticed that it looked like a building. Small, but...maintained. What on Qualdralis?! Was someone LIVING up here?
Soana glanced around as she went around the side of the building, noting the plants in pots and bags of seeds sitting everywhere. It was...odd. Very odd. She sure hoped it wasn't someone mean...
"Ah!" she squeaked as she rounded the corner and saw someone standing there. Someone much bigger than her, too! She blinked and tilted her head, peering closer- the Leothaun had definitely noticed her. She was tall and bulky, well- muscular was a better word for it! Her back was green but her front was a brown gray color, dull like the mountain.
"What are you doing up this high??"
Soana squeaked and covered her mouth in surprise as both of them exclaimed the same line at the same time in the same tone. The larger female, though, didn't even flinch.
"You first," she said in a deeper voice. She didn't seem...angry. Just perplexed, perhaps.
"My name is Soana, I was just..." She paused. What WAS she doing? "I suppose I was just looking for a quiet place."
"Idai. Well, you found it. And brought the sound, as it were." The female went back to what she was doing- from what she could see, Soana assumed that she was digging rows in the dirt for planing. She had a long tool with a hook at the end that was loosening up the dirt. She finished one and then turned back to the Jungle Leothaun, with an expression that practically screamed 'Why are you still here?'
"Nice to meet you, Idai. You're...Mountain?" Soana asked.
"Yeah...you're not, though," Idai said back, putting a hand on her hip.
"No, no, I...I'm from the Jungle," Soana said back. "Well, I was BORN there. I was raised here, at the village!"
"Hm." Idai went back to her work, moving to start on the next row. "Do you need any help?" Soana asked with a smile. This place...she could imagine how lively it was in the warm seasons!
"No, er...thank you," Idai said back awkwardly. "I really need to focus and get the new crops planted by the end of the day. So..." Scoot, she supposed.
"If you're on a time constraint, then you DO need help," Soana deduced confidently. She stepped forward, and Idai stepped back. What, was she afraid?
"There's only one hoe," Idai argued. Soana went over to the side of the cabin, where the seed bags were.
"No problem, I'll just do this then," she said simply with a smile. That would make Idai's work go twice as fast.
"What? But..." Idai thought for a moment. "What do you even know about planting gardens and crops?" she asked, looking for any excuse.
"Well, everything, actually!" Soana laughed as she picked out a bag. "I AM a Jungle. It's our specialty."
Idai blushed and turned away. Damn, that...was a good point. And she would sound like a fool if she said anything else to protest.
"Just...just keep them about two hand lengths apart," she said quietly.
"Yours or mine?" Soana smiled up at the big Mountain. She knew the answer already of course, but she didn't want to embarrass her new friend any more!
"...you know the answer to that already," Idai smiled down at her.
"That I do," Soana laughed as she crouched down to begin planting.
Idai went through her routine, digging into the soil of the land with the long gardening tool in her paws. It was hard work, but it had to be done. She moved back and forth, making row after row, as the hours dragged on and she felt like it was getting to be time for a break soon. And every time she looked over her shoulder, the smaller Leothaun was still there, crouched and waddling back and forth as she planted seeds. She almost never stood up completely; Idai couldn't help but wonder how her knees could handle such abuse! Perhaps it was because she was so small?
And finally, FINALLY she finished. She stopped and let her breath out, turning around once more as she raised an arm to wipe the sweat from her forehead. Soana was still there, right behind her. The Jungle looked up when she noticed she was being watched, and smiled with glee. She was just happy to help!
...Idai could help but smile back. This would have taken her all day- and even though they had doubled the work power, it had only taken a third of the time. It really was useful to have a Jungle around, she thought. She was proven more than a little wrong! What an interesting new point of view...
"Done," Soana breathed as she finally stood up and brushed her hair out of her face. Idai looked up and down the rows- it had all been done perfectly, with no need to go back and fix anything. Very impressive!
"I like them," Soana said next. Idai came out of the moment abruptly and lifted an eyebrow, turning to look around. What was she referring to? "The animals. All of them. This place...this place is beautiful."
Ah. She meant the livestock and wildlife that came to hang around the property. Idai nodded. Some of them were long and thin with fangs and wings; some of them were small and four legged, with plants and bushes in their backs and legs, some of them were large and bulky, obviously meant to be harvested for meat.
"Thank you," Idai said respectfully. "But...you obviously know more about ranching than I do," she smiled.
"Nonsense, you dug out your own irrigation system. Don't think I didn't notice that," Soana insisted. She took in a deep breath. "Ah...this is wonderful. So cool and refreshing. I'm so happy I found you."
Idai couldn't help it. She was grinning from ear to ear. She rather liked this tiny Leothaun! She was polite and intelligent, and above all, passionate.
"Me too, admittedly," she confessed. "I hope you plan on coming back a second time. Can I...make you tea? Cocoa?" she offered.
Soana shook her head. "Unfortunately I do have a night service at the temple to help out with!" she said sadly. "But...hey." She smiled again. "What if I came back tomorrow? This time, just to sit and chat."
"Hm." Idai thought for a moment. "Yeah...you know, I think I would like that."
