AKA the episode Rattrap discovers he's actually a segway scooter, AKA the episode where two of the least honorable characters make a big deal about an honorable agreement.

I feel it gave him a character arc. He's always been sorta strung up, a bit of a coward, but always had his demolition skills to fall back on, and here he has to learn to make due without them, ad he ends up being sorta the inventive one of the group because of his having to find new ways to deal with the world.
He wasn't a coward so much as he was practical. I understand why it took him so long to finally transform but honestly there was no reason to handicap him as much as they did, Rattrap has always been resourceful going as far back as the first season of Beast Wars. All Beast Machines did was make him physically useless in both mode. That still bothers me because Rattrap was established as being trained in espionage and an urban environment like Cybertron should have been ideal for him, if anything he should have been coping better instead of struggling as much as he did.
What's sad is that everything you've said is true. Apart from the mode changes being lazy and the Maximal's robot modes looking meh the animation was a vast improvement to Beast Wars, albeit too dark at times to make out some of what was going on, and the plot was actually pretty good once you got past the fact that they were still fighting Megatron. And yet even with all that it was still far superior to the Unicron Triology.
I know there are flaws to Beast Machines but I personally like it. I also thought certain character arcs were done better than in Beast Wars, specifically Cheetor. I liked his evolution from being stuck in the kid appeal character to become second in command of the maximals.
his one ability in robot mode was that his tail was a kinda universal interface which was useless for anything except moving the plot along. he could use weapons but in this series there generally weren't weapons that you could just pick up they were usually attached to one of the vehicons.
Yeah I never understood why Rattrap of all people would give a damn about honoring an agreement with someone he personally despised.
As for Beast Machines as a series, it was watchable though I didn't care for them handicapping Rattrap the way they did or butchering his appearance outside of Beast Mode. There were aspects of the show that could have been handled much better than they were, all in all was a disappointing follow up to Beast Wars.
