Ren and Stimpy was gross for the sake of being gross. Steven Universe's gay themes (and over all inclusiveness) have a more cultural significance then that. I don't think SU will be canceled any time soon because it's "taboo" nature is seen as important and meaningful to many rather than just vulgar gross out gags.
With an oversimplification you could say both shows are/were "bold" but what makes them bold is completely different.

Well, Ren and Stumpy aired in the 90s. People were... Even less cool about gay stuff back then than they are today. Plus Mr. Rain is correct in saying that show was all kinds of fucked up.
On that note it always bugged me that Ren and Stumpy were officially gay. Not because it was 'wrong' or anything like that, just that it was bad enough when Ren was a sociopathic asshole, now it borders on domestic abuse. That's just not cool.

I like it how there underwaer kinda reflect there personalities ice bears fundoshi is kina boring yet smart choice for japanese men, grizzly's blue boxers show normal broness and panda's pink briefs show his..... soft feminine side.
