It wasn't that a birthday was not something to celebrate, but rather, it was complicated between the different sub-types to find a way to celebrate that might be familiar. Was it a coming of age? What region were they from? Did they eat cake or rather some traditional dish? Did they even have birthday wishes?
For Masika...birthdays were rather dull. There were prayers and singing, and outside of the fact that such prayers were aimed at the particular Leothaun for whose birth was being celebrated, in the Temple it had sounded like any other day. So, on this new passover planet, while waiting for the transport ship to get itself fully charged, back up and running, Masika watched in on something she had never really seen before: A birthday party.
The 'birthday girl' in question? Natalia of the transport ship...the very person that had allowed Masika to stow away until they made their return trip to the Leothaun home world. It was a funny scene, Natalia looking embarrassed as the rest of the crew...as her friends sang her birthday songs and handed her presents to show their appreciation for her being a part of this world. They told stories of how they met and how this person had been there for them in one way or another. Masika herself felt a twinge...was she jealous? Was she sad that no one had ever had such words for her? Or was this twinge something else? Did she feel this way because she too had something to be thankful for when it came to this other Leo? Was it a feeling of a bit of both?
While the rest of the crew sat and spoke and laughed and at what appeared to be sweets (they called it cake), Masika had been sitting by her lonesome, off to the side as to not be a bother. Words had been lost to her the past few days as she knew her trip would be over son and she would be walking up the stairs to the Temple again soon. But now she found herself the will to stand, the will to walk over into the fire light as it had begun to dim and dull. The crew looked up at her, her glowing eyes must have been unnerving in the low lighting...and still, she cleared her throat. Could she say it? Could she get over this fear of speaking such words to someone that was still technically a stranger?
"I...uh...Birthdays are not something I know a lot of..." she started with a large gulp,"In the Temple they are days we give thanks to the Mother Goddess for the birth of our sisters, the fellow priestesses who are supposed to keep spiritual balance on our planet."
A crew member yawned. Was he tired or just bored?! She could feel herself beginning to panic, but, either way she continued: "But, foreign to me or not...you all have made a lovely spectacle of it. It's rare to see such a smile on one of our kind. Your words and memories of Natalia touched her, and to hear someone speaking to highly of our kind, it even touched my heart as well...Er, even if it is not my party I thank you for that." she fidgeted a bit and then decided to get on with it before they walked away. She did not want them to think she was trying to steal the show or anything. "Natalia has been kind to me. She hid me away while the Temple was looking for me...she gave me some freedom, even if only for awhile. On this ship, during these transports, I have experienced so much, and it saddens me that this trip is over because there is yet so little I know about the worlds out there. I don't have years worth of memories or even crazy stories to make people laugh and cry because it was so funny. But, I appreciate this Leothaun's birth, her being in this world...even if it was for selfish reasons because she gave me a piece of the solitude and independence I have been searching for. I uh...I don't have a gift and I can't make or buy a cake but...."
...and she trailed off, opening her hands as blue electricity sparked between her hands. A few crew members backed up, having seen the power she held first-hand, and yet they did not leave the area. It took all her concentration to control the lines as Masika seemingly tossed them into the air where they stuck and hung like a crackling spider's web. The display was a quick one, a few minutes of her standing there as the phrase came together to say "Happy Birthday" and then it vanished before Masika let out a deep breath and wiped her brow.
There was a pause and then some clapping. Turning around, the birthday girl gave applause and then the other crew members followed suit. Words were shared of how pretty it was or how cool it looked, and how it wasn't how much a gift cost, but the effort was what spoke a thousand words about a present. And Masika actually smiled...and spent the evening with the rest of the crew as they relived those memories of Natalia again, only this time, for her to hear and laugh at as well.
One of those journal entries which would always be one of her favorites...on that passover planet, waiting for morning so that they could once again board the transport ship, and set off once again for the Planet of Qualdralis.
