616 has been found to be the original number of the beast and was discovered in 2005. An excerpt of text from a news article;

It was only discovered in recent years so everyone who used the number 666 were correct at the time as no other alternative was known to exist. Now everyone will simply have to adapt to this new discovery and like it because it isn't going to change.
