With my dealings with red dragons in AD&D, I'd be the guy on the backside of the ridge sucking his thumb in the fetal position....
My grey elf killed a crystal dragon with a single called shot after failing his save vs breath weapon. The DM stacked the deck, but I made all my rolls, and the rolled a nat20 on the attack! Never faced a red with him.
My Avarial (winged) elf tho,.... Yeah, the DM didn't like I could fly, and used fire to burn my wings as often as he could.... Including a couple smaller red dragons..... He probably liked the way I played him.
That character started loosing his shit and went from chaotic good to chaotic neutral pretty quick. If I couldn't fly, I'd drift towards neutral, if it was an extended period of time it'd get chaotic. Id attack my own party during fights that didn't have a fire using enemy because it was their fault I couldn't fly, dragging me along on this stupid quest against dragons..
I had a spell worked up to permanently make my wings fireproof, and the DM actually approved it, but the group fell apart long before I could accumulate the components I needed.
