"If there is no darkness, light cannot be enjoyed
If there is no light, dark's chaos is destroyed"
A lame small poem that I made #
Contest entry for Deviantart... and I won!!! 1st place :D
Her contest was quite a challenge you can only use black and white and you have to use a butterfly, star, and heart incorporated into the picture. The butterflies can be found on the phoenix's leg and the heart is found on one of the feather of the phoenix. The dragon has the star on his shoulder. Also it was a challenge cause this is my first time drawing black and white creatures in just colorless media. Very good challenge for me.:D
I was too stupid to try a buy a new big oaktag and cutting into 11 x 14 to use for this piece. This piece is too big for the scanner, so I have to use a camera and it blur up the detail and lost the intensity of black and white.:( Also the oaktag is freaking rough. But the good thing is that when I draw in black and white it only takes half the time than if I did it in color. This took about 7 hours.:)
My quote on the top shows how dark and light cannot be overbalancing over each other. Like for example if you have a whole world in darkness but no light, how can you get darkness' dramatic feeling? If everything is bright, but no darkness, how can light be beautiful and shown to its intensity? So it is a mix of both darkness and light to create 3D and beauty into our lives. Sorry for my rambling.
Also I used exclusively black color pencil. I thought it'll prevent smudging of the piece, I was wrong.>.< I spend about half an hour cleaning it up. Also I used up the whole black pencil, cause the lead kept breaking. ):<

Great sweeping motion and piling of light over dark. It gives the impression of a breaking wave. For black/white, have you tried charcoal pencils? They're really cheap, give good blacks, and you can do neat tricks with purposeful smudging and erasing.
If you can scan it in pieces and reassemble it into one image, I'd love to see it in more detail.
