the engine was the Jumo 213 from the Ju 188, the Ju 88 used the Jumo 211 which was a different animal and when used in fighters the plane was a real dog ( Avia S199 )
The Jumo 213 was actually a very good engine for a fighter. Keep in mind, that the He 111 used DB601 of Bf109E/F fame for a while before switching to the 211.
