This took longer than expected to write, but here it is finally xvx Might not be perfect, but hey :3
I still feel some parts go by a bit uh, quickly - but I feel it’s adequate enough and gets the point across. It’s already at 1,040 words hah xD
I’m so out of practice writing… I haven’t written an actual short story since High School ;v;
It was late in the afternoon, and many monsters were shuffling about after a day of questing. Some were heading home, some were just taking a break. Some wore confident and satisfied expressions, having had successful ventures that day. Others were less fortunate, looking beaten and defeated. TP the Great Jaggi was one of the latter.
His time here had not been easy, between his difficult time at work and fairly low income he also had Plessi the plesioth to deal with, who found much amusement in tormenting him wherever possible. TP largely ignored Plessi’s verbal abuse however, though the other day Plessi had gone as far as to take a package TP’s parents had sent him, holding it just out of his reach while taunting him.
Much to TP’s dismay, his full name was printed on the stamp. He had to give his full name to Tori when signing up here, and by extension Kudora had to know as well, but no one else knew. After that afternoon though, Plessi knew about it as well.
TP was thinking about this while waiting in line at the supply shop when the monster ahead of him moved out of the way. He stepped up to the counter and was greeted by the felyne managing the shop. She wasn’t sure where the monsters kept their resources, since they didn’t have any pockets. A question best left unanswered, she thought. The felyne took the resources from TP and traded it out for a package of potions, and waved goodbye.
As he was heading back outside he caught site of his rathian friend Riza talking to some hunter. He wasn’t familiar with this one though, not one he’d seen before. Seeing TP approaching, the human bid farewell to Riza then turned to leave. After he had left, Riza approached TP.
TP had just gotten through a long and rough day at work, but he was happy to set some time aside to talk to his friend. Riza was one of the few friends he had here.
“Ah, TP you don’t look so good.” Riza said, noticing the many cuts and bruises TP had.
“Don’t worry too much, this is normal for me…”
“Doesn’t it hurt though?” Riza asked
TP sifted through his satchel and pulled out a large green vial. “Somewhat, but these help with that.”
No one really seemed to understand how these potions could soothe and heal wounds so quickly, but no one really stopped to question it either. If it worked, it worked. That’s all that really mattered.
“I suppose…” Riza replied, still somewhat concerned.
“By the way, who was that you were talking to? I didn’t recognize him.”
“His name is Allos, he’s a friend of my mother’s.”
“I see, he stop by here often?” TP asked.
Riza shook her head. “No, it’s his first time. He was just checking up on me since my mother couldn’t come herself.”
TP was fiddling with the cap on the potion trying to get it open when Plessi approached the two.
“Need some help with that, useless?” he chuckled.
“No thanks, I’ve got it..” TP muttered, not even glancing in Plessi’s direction.
“Why are you always insulting him,” Riza huffed angrily, “He’s trying as hard as he can!”
“Hah! You don’t get it do you? That’s just who he is. You know what his full name is don’t you?”
TP grimaced. “Please don’t say it…”
Plessi continued anyway. “His initials, T.P.? They stand for “target practice”. It’s all he’s good for really.”
Embarrassed that Plessi had blurted out his name in front of his friend, TP grabbed his pack of potions and hurried out of the room, ignoring the laughing of Plessi and the monsters that had overheard him revealing his name. Riza had called out for him to wait, but he kept on running down the path towards his home.
TP had sprinted the whole length of the long winding path from the monster’s quest hall down to the edge of the grove where many monsters made their homes. Most were fairly simple, just enough to keep the resident warm and safe from the elements. TP’s was located just a bit further in, a humble lean-to that he made himself the day he signed up at the so-called monster’s guild for work.
Panting slightly from the long run, he sighed then dropped his pack next to the straw mat he slept on. He slumped onto the mat and stared glumly at the satchel. TP was just reaching over to open it up when he heard someone calling his name. Turning to look back up the way he came, he saw Riza coming down the path, with the human Raven following her.
“TP, are you okay?” Riza started, “You ran off so quickly and…”
“I’m fine” he responded, though it was clear from his expression he was anything but fine.
“What happened?” Raven asked.
“Plessi was making up rude things about TP back at the guild”
“Well, he wasn’t… Target Practice is my full name…” TP muttered.
Riza and Raven both turned to look at TP in surprise.
TP sighed, then began to explain. “There’s a lot of Jaggi. There’s so many of us in fact, that we’re not even given names until we do something to merit the effort of thinking of one.”
He pulled out one of the potions from the satchel then continued. “I always had a hard time with fighting. I was never any good at it. And that’s how I got my name…”
Raven and Riza were silent for a moment, unsure of what to say.
Finally, Riza broke the silence. “Well embarrassing name or not, you’re still my friend.”
“Yeah, and mine too!” Raven piped in.
TP gazed at the human awkwardly.
“What, we can still be friends right?”
TP smiled gently. “The more the merrier I guess.”
The three continued to converse happily outside TP’s humble home, the stress of the day entirely forgotten. TP had a rough time making it through his work days, but the few friends he had here made things feel so much more bearable.
