Full disclosure: This is a PG-13 rated story featuring regression, violence, and tragedy. I had somebody ask me how I would rate the level of graphicness to the story, and I think the closest analog would be the original Star Wars trilogy in terms of violence. Fundamentally, this is a war story, and things happen in war. You get the picture.

I'm not sure I'd agree with the whole court marshal bit, perhaps in this world. But for real military an officer using slanderous terms especially when there is no immediate provocation could get them in serious trouble and their are witnesses. So the officer would be better off licking his wounds and considering it a draw.
In actuality, Az is downplaying the consequences of his action. In a time of war (which it is in this story), striking a superior officer is a capital offense punishable by death. At the very least, he'd be facing a dishonorable discharge.
However, in this particular case, Edelman would not press charges because it would reveal he is a specist and that he got his ass kicked by a rabbit (which he would be incredibly humiliated by). Yes, he COULD cause severe trouble for Az, but only by embarrassing himself in the process.
