The Help! I'm a Fish 15th Anniversary Is Here!
Alright guys, it’s finally the 22nd, the first day of Help! I’m a Fish week!
For those of you who don’t know, on June 29th 2016, HIAF will be 15 years old since it’s theatrical release! Since this movie is vastly under appreciated, we’re celebrating it’s existence!
The festivities are simple! I have concocted a list of daily themes for artists to partake in! However, if you don’t feel like drawing every day, you don’t have the time, or none of these themes appeal to you, that’s totally ok! There’s the option to draw what you want, when you want. The themes are here to mostly spark ideas.
And of course drawing isn’t the only way to celebrate. You can write, make music, basically do whatever you like should you feel the urge! Even just making a text post about your memories of this film would more than suffice! Open discussion of the film is also encouraged. Basically, anything goes.
However, anything NSFW that is more drastic than visual blood and body horror is looked down upon and should not be posted for this event. That’s the only rule that should be followed. Not respecting this rule will get you blocked by me and the HIAF blog. I may also report you, depending on on the content. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.
Ok, let’s stop beating around the bush and get to the themes!
1.) Summer fun!
2.) WILD CARD (Whatever you want!)
3.) Fan OCs!! (Heck it could even be a fish version of yourself!)
4.) Headcanons??*
5.) Alternate Universes**
6.) Favorite part of the movie.
7.) Favorite Character(s).
* Example: Are there other ways you think the kids changed after their adventure than shown in the movie? How about the parents? What happened to the remaining intelligent fish? How does the family take care of Sasha? What were the kids like/up to before the events of the movie? ETC.
** Example: What if Joe/Shark/Crab persevered? Or what would have happened had any of them been successful? What if someone who didn’t die canonly died? … I can’t think of anything not gruesome right now BUT ETC. Crossovers apply here as well! (i.E. A We’re Back! crossover)
If anyone needs elaborations on any of these, feel free to message me!
One more thing: For those of you who haven’t seen the movie/want to watch it again, I will be streaming the English version! It is on Youtube but we’re going to watch it as a group. If you like that kind of thing, come join us! If not, feel free to watch it on your own time! <3
Other languages that will be available to stream as well: Japanese, Icelandic, Swedish, Spanish, and Dutch.
I want to stream on the evening of the 29th as a grand finale type thing but I realize it’s a Wednesday and people have other obligations on week days. So, I’m offering to stream it on Saturday instead if that will work out for more people. Maybe even Friday. Feel free to message me the best day/time that would work out for you and what language you’d prefer to watch! After I get a general consensus, I’ll make a schedule and announce it a day or two before hand.
I’ve already said this twice, but I’ll say it one more time, if you have ANY questions regarding this week long event, please message me! I am happy to answer any questions you may have!
This is meant to be a social event so, please, be kind to one another and feel free to mingle! I’ll definitely be throwing myself around should anyone participate. c8
That’s all I got! Let the festivities COMMENCE!

I'd never heard of this movie until I saw this in somebody's favorite list. Naturally, I had to check it out and enjoyed watching it online. Very much of its time with all the music numbers it felt it had to do, but the characters were fun and I loved the bit where Fly said he'd miss being a fish. The parent's reactions were spot on. Makes you wonder if they wouldn't give those potions another try together as a family after the end.
I love your icon too.

Hello!
I'm really happy to hear that you checked it out and enjoyed it! As far as the music goes, it seems like people are 50/50 most of the time. Some people really like it, and some people not so much. Personally I think that the songs that were sung by characters were important (especially the Professor's) and that the bubblegum pop songs in the background were probably there because they had to be. But I didn't feel like they were jarring by any means, and I enjoy listening to them so it's not so bad.
That said I think that character-sung songs having actual significance to a story is something I wish more movies would do. Just one more reason on the endless list as to why this movie is my favorite of all time. XD
Haha yeah I don't know! I have my own headcanons as to what I think happened after the film but I don't know if you want to hear me blather about that. XD I have a tendency to get really long winded when I talk about this film.
Aww thank you so much! I really love Fly... He's my favorite, though Chuck is a really really close second. Everyone in this movie is so lovable and realistic in the way they behave... This film is too good, it's really sad that it's so unappreciated.

Greetings!
I tend to prefer the more mellow and intentionally Romantic Era style music to the upbeat showtune style that I thought the songs in "Help I'm a Fish" had. For instance, I thought the music in Frozen was boring and sounded the same. *shrugs* That said, I can see your point about the songs here advancing the characters and the story so on that count they are better than the average offering.
I actually like hearing ideas about what might happen after the movie; I'm quite partial to transformation as well so something like this is immediately appealing to me. Besides, you don't have too many good examples of aquatic TF to begin with. So I'd love to hear your ideas.
I concur that the characters are all very believable. The kids acted like kids and solved the problems like kids. The parents acted like parents (and being the father of a 3 1/2 year old daughter, I know exactly what their fear is like!) The nutty professor's solution to the oceans rising reminds me of a story I wrote back in the 90s about scientists turning people into anthro bears to prepare them for a new Ice Age.
I am surprised I had never heard of this. I am not surprised I missed it back then (I was at the age that cartoon movies were not on my radar), but I am surprised that it left so little impression; there were a lot of cartoon productions that I didn't see when they came out that I have seen since then, but this...
Thank you so much for giving it some love. Thanks to you sharing this I've discovered another fun movie.

I can at least agree that Frozen's music was terrible. I actually really detest Frozen for several reasons, but I don't hate that people like it. It's just certainly not my kind of film. HIAF's euro pop I thought was at least enjoyable and VERY early 2000s so it's got an uncommon but fun aesthetic going. But that's all personal opinion stuff. I respect that you have a different taste and it's absolutely ok to not like the music in this film. <3
Oh? Well, I'll try not to be too wordy about it then. I don't even have all the details worked out yet. I only have the beginning figured out... Anyway, since they left still intelligent fish in the ocean, Chuck and the Professor work together to figure out what they should do about them. It's suggested that maybe they should try to find a way to change them back, but Chuck suggests that maybe they should study them instead! See how they figure out their own society and watch what they invent. MacKrill is on board with the idea and hires the kids to study them as a side job after school. And while Chuck prefers to keep his distance and observe from afar, Fly wants to be friends and play with them. So the story starts out with their differing opinions on such matters: Chuck catches Fly teaching the fish football (or finball, as he calls it) and gets frustrated, pulling Fly to the side to tell him why he shouldn't be doing that.
It's hard to explain without visuals so I'll give you my really rough "storyboard" of how I think this goes down: http://sta.sh/0j9v4amoei2
And when I'm actually done with making this project, hopefully each frame will look like this: http://sta.sh/0soforjfkgt
But it'll be a long time before it's finished. I have over 80 or so canvases dedicated to this silly idea so there's a looot of work to be done. XD
I like transformation in the way that I wouldn't mind if it happened to me and it's fun to see other characters as animals design-wise but that's about as far as it goes.
Yeah, bless this movie man. It's really really sad it's so cast aside.
That's pretty cool!
Anyway, if you live in America, don't worry about never hearing about this movie before. The film came out in Europe in 2001 and didn't come to the States until 2006. It's title in America is "A Fish Tale" and the cover is extremely misleading. I have a whole rant about it here if you're interested in knowing more about it: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/15208453/
Honestly if you live outside of Europe, chances are you've never heard about it. It did really REALLY well there, but it probably helped that it was created within Europe. Everywhere else just... Didn't care enough about it to buy the distributing rights and help it along globally. It sucks. 8( But that's part of the reason why I draw so much fanart and promote this movie as best I can. It deserves SO much more attention. I didn't know this movie existed till October 2014 and I'm a very avid animated movie nerd, especially for the more obscure. It's heart breaking!
Aww shucks, it's the least I can do for the film and it's creators. I want the movie to have a second chance, to be as popular as it should have been so many years ago. Don't know if that dream will ever come to fruition but I'll keep trying! Something's bound to happen eventually.
Heh, and no problem! I'm always happy to share the joy of HIAF. <33

I like your idea for a "sequel" here. I thought it odd that they would have the beginning of a society after only a single night already up and running, but clearly they need to ponder what would happen from here. And I can see Fly and Chuck doing exactly that too! I couldn't quite make out all the words in the Storyboard, but the expressions were clear and the designs very true to the original. It looked like Fly and Chuck to me and felt honest to both of them.
Bringing any story to life is always a challenge. I write stories, but even so to really make them stick you have to work them over and over again. If you want to make this happen for "HIAF", you will manage it.
So you think the potion will work on them the same way every time... I wonder if repeated exposure would have any other side-effects that they might have to deal with too.
Wow, that American release poster is hideous! Man, if I had seen that I would have definitely stayed away from the movie. Wow did they ever shoot themselves in the foot!
I hope that others hear about the movie and enjoy it too!

Aw shucks, thank you! I've put a lot of thought into it... More than I'd like to admit. And I'm sorry about you not being able to read it all very clearly. My handwriting is baaaad. It's slowly getting better but I realize I don't always make things clear. To be fair, though, I never had intentions of sharing my original sketches so handwriting/legibility wasn't my main priority. I knew what I wanted and what I wrote, but I should realize that even if I don't plan to share them, I might as well take the time to make sure what I write is legible just in case. Regardless, I'm very glad to hear that you can see them acting this way! It helps, since I often question if I'm keeping them in character. Though some things aren't in the original sketches. When Chuck gets up after Fly swims into him, he has Fly join him behind a wall of kelp nearby so the other fish don't hear them talking about the experiment and other human things. Since none of the fish know the kids are actually humans. But other than that everything's pretty much the same.
And thank you again... I hope I can find a way to make this a well rounded hypothetical sequel. I'll do my best to not disappoint!! <3
I have thought about that! Not extensively, but enough to have at least a couple headcanons. I do think that everyone who drinks the potion, even just once, will always have a slight fishy smell as a side effect. It's not very prominent, you'd have to have your nose practically against them to smell it, but it's there. Physically, I'm not sure if they'd change very much or at all when reverting back to humans, regardless of how many times they change back and fourth. Perhaps, if you change from a fish to human too quickly, drinking the potions practically back to back, would really mess you up. You'd probably want the first potion to get through your system a bit before drinking the other.
Yeah it's REALLY bad. But I don't think the original developers are to blame at all. Granted, I have NO idea what they were thinking when they handed the distribution rights over to a company that made such an ABSURD cover but perhaps they had no other choice? I mean I think it's a matter of "no-one but this company is willing to distribute our movie in the USA... I guess it's better than nothing? It has been four years since our movie came out. Maybe something good will come out of it". I don't even know if the original movie team saw how they were gonna have their film marketed... Who knows. I tried asking the director about the movie a bit but I think I accidentally brought up some bad memories because he sounded hurt. Like things were meant to be so much different but in the end he and his team got shit on by the US. I can't blame him for being so upset at all. I would be too. In fact, I am. This movie is so good and well written but hardly anyone has given it the time of day, let alone the love it deserved. Even the love I've tried to give it isn't enough... I really do wish it had a better fate.
... Sorry I got all melodramatic. I have very strong feelings about this. XD;I'm glad you hope others find it and like it too! Let's hope for the best!!

Handwriting plus scanners is usually a bad combination so don't feel bad, so don't worry about it too much. Thank you for sharing it with me.
Ah, so none of the other fish realize that they were given intelligence by the humans? What happened to the shark from the first movie? I got the impression that he had survived.
Fish smell, eh? I bet that will make relations interesting when they get older.
What about the scientist? Is he conducting more research? I know he was creating his fish formula to prepare the world for rising sea levels.
I suspect that a movie like this will in time develop a good cult following and that will bit by bit bring it back into the public awareness. Your efforts have already helped me learn about it. And I mentioned it to a few other TF enthusiasts this last weekend so I'm sure a few more folks know about it.
