Rin Vixess Character Ref 2016
WARNING: LONG DESCRIPTION/CHARACTER BIO BELOW
Behold, the most current and complete ref of Rin yet! Shows her feral, babyfur, normal forms, exact colors, and details. More is below, but this is the gist. Read on if you want, but you don't have to.
Features of this guide
1. Her exact colors.
Her main color, that rust color, is meant to be closer to what my original vision of her was. I originally had her as rust colored, but had some issues with it becoming lighter/more orangey. The purple has gotten a bit darker as well, but also became a bit more orchid/mulberry in color to fit better with the rusty brown. Her teal tongue, paw pads, inner ears, and blood (yes her blood is teal, this has nothing to do with Homestuck) have taken on a more greenish hue than they originally had (they used to be more a darker blueish color). The eye color is a bit brighter than it once was, and that reflects the color of my suit's eyes. While Rin's hair tuft and eyes are meant to be direct ties to my own hair and eye color, there is enough variation in the colors to make them work with the rest of her colors. My hair is actually a tiny bit lighter and my eyes are more of a steely blue, duller than Rin's.
2. Details (Headshot closeup, eyes, tongue/mouth, paw pads which I don't always draw).
This section is where I wanted to show some of the details of Rin's design. As stated above, her tongue, paw pads, and inner ears are all teal to match her blood. Her blood is teal because I typically base a character's blood color on the color of the characters inner ears, paws, and tongue, parts of the body which would normally have blood vessels (and thus, blood coloration) close to the surface of the skin. The inside of her mouth, not including her tongue, is the same blue as her eyes. She has claws which are the same teal as her paw pads, but since they are retractable, I don't always draw them.
3. Her little/pup version.
Since Rin's little side is also a big part of who she is, I had to include this version as well! This bit is just a quick ref of more anatomy than anything; Rin was kinda a fluffy pup! Her markings aren't any different in her younger form, her fur is just a bit fluffier and her paws are a bit too big for her.
4. Her feral form.
Necessary to have a feral ref as well, since technically she began as a feral character! Rin's short (like me, hah) so her legs are a bit shorter than usual. Not so short that she looks like a dachshund, but slightly shorter than a normal fox's legs. Again, markings don't change here. She retains her personality and intellect across her anthro and feral versions, with the only changes being slight differences in her pup form's mind.
5. Her anthro/adult form.
And finally, her main and current form! This is her main character ref, the one I want anyone looking to draw her to look at. It shows her markings on an anthropomorphic form and is accurate to the current (and unless I for whatever reason redesign her, final) form she exists in. The marking on her stomach/chest does go up to just under her chin, because that's what my suit's marking looks like. Think of a fox's underbelly/facial marking, minus the facial part, and that's about what it is.
A bit about her personality
Her good traits:
~Friendly, caring, loyal, and honest
~Motherly, doesn't like to see others upset or in pain
~Little pup at heart, content with simple things
~Willing to put others' welfare before her own
~Tries her best to be studious
Her flaws:
~Can be stubborn
~Doesn't know how to take a compliment
~A bit blushy and shy sometimes
~Tends to put too much pressure on herself
Miscellaneous bits:
~Loves cute things, robots/mechas, mythical/fantasy critters, and sweets
~Somewhat easily scared, often hugs her tail when frightened
~Is perfectly content with spending winter curled up with a mug of hot chocolate and her mates~
~Her nickname, Rinny, is one that her mate came up with and it just stuck
More about her species/appearance
Rin is a wolf-fox hybrid, with a bit of lynx thrown in (hence the claws and some of her dialect). As such, she has markings from both wolves and foxes; the lynx is more present in behavior than appearance. The markings on her ears, limbs, and tail come from her fox side; her belly markings and the marks around her eyes stem from wolves and a bit of imagination.
Her hair tuft and eyes match mine and are my way of putting a bit more of myself into my fursona. When choosing her species, I did not want her to be a wolf because that's sort of become the standard base character for a lot of people and I didn't want to disappear into the crowds. Truthfully, I really like foxes because of their diversity and character traits, speaking from an evolutionary standpoint. However I didn't think I wanted her to be just another fox either. So I began to look around and look in to a possible hybrid character. Hybrids were much less common and some of the species and designs I saw just blew me away. It was really impressive to see artists mixing together traits in a new way to create a new character that had never been seen before. So, after a bit more research, I eventually settled with Rin's hybrid species, the folf. What I like about the hybrids out there is that there is no universal species standard for what the markings, body, etc. should look like. There might be a general consensus, but there's nothing set in stone, which leaves open a whole realm of possibilities for an artist to work with.
