Well in this case they go to the auto shop down the street from the station and end up with a for sale sign in the window. Here we see Brownfield Tank 2 (Tender 2 for you folks out west who think tankers have to come with wings).
On a side note, I realize that many small FD's are short on money. But the use of retired oil tankers as FD water tankers is never a safe under taking. FEMA did a study on FD water tanker operations several years ago and its available to anyone who wants a copy. In the study they show the large number of crashes that occur with home made or converted fire tankers.

Yeah that was one of the major points, and the other major points were also.
1- Weight of product- Water 8.434 pounds per gallon, oil products around 7.2 pounds per gallon
2- The adding of additional weight such as pumps and hose
3- Many times the vehicles were at the end of their regular service life, which is why the oil companies were selling them.

;nods; Unfortunately to some of the lesser fortunate departments those vehicles are sometimes the only option. One firehouse in my town still runs a custom built '61 tractor drawn 5000 gallon tanker with a high pressure pump mounted in the rear and tool boxes along the bottom of the trailer. In all honesty I am surprised they still use it, as a section of the tank started to rust out.
Tank rusting can be fixed in a couple ways, well, after you cut and weld in a patch panel, Weld in a couple pipe fittings on top that'll take a common hot water heater anode or, every time the truck is filled, add 2 cups per 1000 gallons of Arm and Hammer laundry detergent, its waaaay cheaper than tank protector and you won't have orange water no matter how long it sits.
