Always a crowd pleaser in all sorts of sci-fi.
Good stuff, I like the design, the only quibble I have is depending on the depth of the cut, the emitter/shaper might get caught if the item being sliced was too thick.

For 'pointless and zen-like', it's damn fine work, because the picture is still a great expressive piece.
Some of the details also give you a moment to go "Huh.. oh! So THAT'S how that apparently works."
(such as the hinge joint on the plasma kukri--it's a fold-out, to keep the kukri compact when not in use.)
I like moments like that in my pictures.
