As a former owner of pet reptiles, I can say that I'm not surprised that you saw no signs of distress.
It is completely within the nature of reptiles to show no signs of problems outward until they're right on death's door. Well past the "Too late" point. It's a defensive instinct so no predator can take advantage of it while still alive.
