The Yakovlev YAK-50 is a russian aerobatics and training aeroplane produced by Yakovlev between 1975 and 1986. It was powered by a radial engine Vedeneyev M14 which, depending on the model of the engine, could develop between 360 and 450 hp. The first variants had a lot of problems with the unlimited aerobatics which caused a very short use of those aircrafts by the Russian National Aerobatics Team which flew it for only 50h before to see the problems on the wings. Nevertheless, Yakovlev reacted and developped, few years after its first release, from the c/n 102 to 2806, two variants with strenghten wings spares which resolved this problems.
In despite of those problems, two pilots won the FAI WAC, the World Aerobatics Championship, on board of a YAK-50: the Russian Victor Letsko in 1976, who has been killed on the same year on board of his YAK-50 of first variant because of the rupture of one of his wing, and his compatriot Victor Smolin in 1982.
It also served in the DOSSAF, a paramilitary sport organisation, of USSR and later of Russia, Ukraine and of Lithuania.
Today, on the 314 exemples built, only around 90 are still airworthy.
