Just a little story snippet i decided to write.
“W-wait up!”
The blue wolf was breathing heavily, exhausted with trying to keep up with Meteo. His feet were already sore from the harsh forest floor, his soft paws doing nothing to soften each step. As Meteo came to a stop, the wolf collapsed next to a tree, panting.
“Look…you…” Meteo growled, dissatisfied with the wolf’s inability to keep up.
“It’s Lucky, Lucky Fo–”
“Alright, whatever” Meteo interrupted, “look Lucky, we don’t have much time to get to the other side of this forest. My brother won’t follow us through here.”
Lucky looked over at Meteo, confused. “We’re running…from your BROTHER? But then…”
“I promise I’ll exp–”
“No!” Lucky yelled and grabbed Meteo’s arm, “Tell me what’s going on! I…I suddenly have t-this mark on me and then, and then…”
Lucky’s expression changed from anger to despair. Letting go of Meteo’s arm, he fell to his knees, tears falling down his face. Meteo looked down at the wolf and sighed.
“…And then the King’s army tried to kill us, yes. They won’t stop until both of us are dead, particularly me.”
Lucky continued to sob, a slight breeze rustling the leaves of the trees. The forest was dark and eerie. It was quite obvious why Meteo had chosen to flee through the forest, as his brother’s army would never make it through the thorns and overgrowth.
Meteo crouched down and rubbed Lucky’s head in an attempt to comfort him. Lucky jumped a bit in surprise, but relaxed as Meteo continued to pet him. His fur was incredibly soft, and slightly illuminated by the yellow markings near his eyes. Meteo hadn’t been out much, and his interaction with others was always highly monitored. To be free from that hell was both a blessing and a curse, and whether or not he would live to tell the tale was still to be determined.
Meteo stood back up and put out his paw. “Here, let’s go.”
Lucky looked up and wiped the tears from his eye, then grabed Meteo’s paw. After Meteo helped him up, the two continued to navigate through the forest. The forest continued to get darker, the sun completely blocked out by the trees. However, deeper in the forest, the two furs noticed plants glowing purple.
Meteo took a closer look, tearing off one of the leaves. The leaf quickly lost its glow and crumbled into dust. “U-uh, you know anything about these Lucky?” Meteo asked, perplexed by the dark dust left on his paw.
“Its a soul flower I think” Lucky said as he grabbed a leaf as well, only for it to also crumble into dust. “Legends say that the glow of these blooms help lead lost souls to their final resting place.”
“I’m gunna be honest with you, that’s a bit creepy. Heh, just a legend though, right?” Meteo said worriedly.
Lucky nodded his head. “Mhmm, they aren’t edible, but if processed correctly, they make for some pretty neat lamps!”
“Oh really?” Meteo dropped his travel sack and opened it, rummaging through it for something.
“Yep! Because the leaves degrade so fast, you have to use the liquid that’s inside the bulb. Even so, you would need a fire and uh—”
Lucky tilted his head. Was Meteo ignoring him? Then, Meteo pulled out a small lantern, holding it up before nodding and walking over to Lucky.
Meteo held out the lantern. “You were saying? We’re gunna need some light, and I doubt these little bulbs will be of much use once the sun sets.”
“What about a fire though? The forest is too wet for anything to ignite…” Lucky stopped talking when he noticed Meteo’s eyes glowing a fiery yellow. From his paw, a bright, round flame appeared, almost like a marble. Lucky watched in awe as Meteo took one of the bulbs and put it in the lantern, dropping the fiery marble in as well.
The forest lit up in a bright light as the reaction occurred. The flames from the bulb produced very light blue flames, and plenty bright enough as well.
Lucky was shocked, he figured Meteo was more than what he was letting on, but never did he expect this. “H-h-how did y-you…” Lucky stuttered, unable to get over the sheer amazement.
“This is the power granted by the marks on my legs. Since you have a mark like mine, you probably have some sort of magical power as well.” Meteo said, holding up the lantern. “Dang this thing is bright.” he mumbled.
Lucky put his right paw to his chest, right over the circular mark. It didn’t feel any different than the rest of his fur, but was colored a bright yellow, similar to the stripes near his eyes.As Meteo started walking away, Lucky joined up with him.
Lucky had so many questions. He had just met this dragon before his entire world turned upside down. A dragon! The only dragons he had seen before were either very rich or some kind of royalty. However, Meteo had a skull mask or something, and Lucky had never seen anything like it before. As the sun set, the forest started getting foggy, adding to the eerie feeling the forest gave off. Lucky, however, wasn’t worried. He felt safe with Meteo, despite knowing almost nothing about him. Lucky started to daydream about what Meteo may have been like before they met. Maybe he lived in a castle town, where all the rich folk were? Or maybe there was a nation with tons of dragons somewhere out there?
Lucky snapped back to reality when Meteo suddenly stopped.
“Hey, why’d you sto–mmrph!”
Meteo shoved his paw over Lucky’s snout, motioning for him to get quiet. The forest was completely silent, no wind, nothing more than the sound of the two furs breathing. Nothing was moving, almost as if time had stopped. Meteo took a step back and looked down at Lucky.
“Something’s not right, get down.” Meteo commanded, a sense of urgency in his voice. Lucky crouched behind a tree, while Meteo got to the ground and put out the lantern. Despite there not being any sort of noise, Lucky and Meteo didn’t feel alone. It was almost pitch black without the lantern, but they felt as if something was watching them.
“Lucky” Meteo whispered, “You live close to these forests, anything else I should know about them?”
Lucky shuddered, the tree he was leaning against felt cold and lifeless. “O-only legends and rumors, but no one ever goes into these forests, its too dark, and besides the soul flowers, there’s really nothing of use in here.”
Meteo was about to respond, but instead was interrupted by a different voice. A voice that was singing. Soft and dissonant, the singing grew louder as the source of the song came closer. Bright red eyes pierced through the blackness, followed by small purple flames. Whatever it was, it was large, its eyes towering above them. Lucky was frozen in fear. Every cell in his body screamed at him to run, to get away from this monster. The soft singing changed to a deep, demonic growl as it spoke.
“Welcome to my forest…”
