Being her own free agent has its benefits, though Velvet Soul does understand the Galactic Federation's reluctance to work with her, owing to her Space Pirate affiliation. She did, however, manage to find out about the BSL and the research they conducted therein. It wasn't long before she discovered the research on Metroids and she firmly advised they cease.
The Federation representatives responded in kind by locking her in with the Metroids. Surely no one would miss a Chozo girl that wasn't even public knowledge anyways. What they failed to account for, however, was the fluidity of her genome.
Once a Metroid latched over her helmeted head, Velvet felt the creature pull away just as her Power Suit deactivated against her will. Her eye-piece that she kept on in cases of this gave a read-out of her body's current status, as her own existence was linked with that of the Power Suit's.
*Warning: Foreign DNA introduced into system. Sequence recognized as Metroid.*
Shortly after, she found her way out, the Metroids leaving her alone after that, strangely. Perhaps they saw her as one of their own?
Upon exiting the restricted sector, days after her initial imprisonment, she found a familiar huntress, Samus, trawling through the BSL station, oddly enough also showing signs of Metroid DNA fusion. Velvet agreed to aid Samus in her adventure, and the two caught up a little before splitting up. After all, it made sense to split the SA-X's attention. As she trawled through the station, Velvet continued to try summoning her Power Suit, unable to gain anything beyond her blaster.
When she encountered the globule parasite her memories labeled as the X, she knew she was safe with the Metroid DNA. But when she touched the creature and absorbed its energy into her, she was revisited by a very familiar sensation....
Yep, Velvet Soul, with the introduction of Metroid DNA into her ever-malleable genome, grows fatter when she absorbs X parasite. Which is a shame because all the ones on SR388 and the BSL are dead.
But is that truly all of the X in the galaxy? Surely the Metroids weren't perfectly efficient....
