Cedar is not nearly as imposing as he appears at first glance. Standing six foot five inches, with a spiked face and tail, coloration vaguely reminiscent of war paint, and a trim, muscular physique, he has become accustomed to the involuntary flinches and reflexive retreats he encounters upon meeting new people. While he is quite skilled at mollifying any discomfort the instinctive reaction to a first encounter with him might cause, he always feels a slight twinge of pain to see it. Cedar is honestly happy with his looks, but deep down inside a part of him wishes he appeared more approachable.
Get to know him better, and he would hope you would describe him with the word “compassionate.” Cedar will bend over backwards to take care of those he meets; he can’t bear to witness suffering, cruelty, or despair. Ask him to do something for you, and he’ll almost always do it (even if he does gripe and grumble a little bit). Unless stopped, he tends to gravitate toward a “big brother” role; fighting battles, offering comfort, and dispensing (usually unasked-for) advice. Of course, like every big brother in history, he does have a tendency to tease, tickle, and slightly terrorize his younger siblings. He is convinced that most people find it endearing, though.
He will freely admit to being a bit of a know-it-all, and can easily begin lecturing if you get him talking about a subject he has any sort of familiarity with. He is deathly afraid of alienating people though, and thus usually will avoid talking at all with people whom he isn’t familiar, just to be on the safe side. Although he puts on a confident, composed, and altogether-with-it façade, in truth his opinion of himself is low. Rejection and dismissal hurt him greatly, and he has a deep-seated need for the approval of others.
Of all the hobbies, interests, and pastimes he’s dabbled in (and there have been many), his one abiding love has been books, and the stories they contain. He has bookcases full of hundreds of books, most of which he has read more than once. Fantasy, Science Fiction, Mystery, and the other “genre fictions” are his mainstay, and he has always been a little self-conscious about his aversion to “high literature.” He simply would rather immerse himself in exciting and fantastic worlds and settings than trudge through the dreary, mundane worlds of the great works of western literature. His affinity for the fantastic has given him the ability to craft compelling worlds and settings, but he has always fallen short when attempting to drive a narrative through the worlds he crafts. One day, he would love to be able to write the type of story he has lived his life reading.
