Endless Realms - Encounters
Corebook artwork for Endless Realms, a D&D-like "pen and paper" fantasy RPG I'm working for.
An illustration for the section of the Corebook on encounters - here we have a Yakshi warrior ready to fend off an ambush from a handful of pesky bagboos.

Yup ;) Haha, I still remember my absolutely FIRST random encounter ever, when I put Final Fantasy 1 into the NES, which was a game my sister got and I had no idea about what it was going to be like, and I was wandering around outside on the world map when suddenly *FLASH FLASH* *BATTLE MUSIC* - as a little kid of like, 5, this was the most intense thing ever XD
Yeah, after a campaign or group does it for a while it eventually stops. But I think you're right about the newcomers. I think it just helps with the immersion part, because that's what will ultimately turn a newbie into a returning player. It's why if I'm DMing and there are people new to gaming in particular at the table, I'll try and add little touches like music.
Haha, good ol' Two Steps from Hell ;)
For our somewhat-survival-horror-themed campaign, there was a lot of Eternal Darkness/Diablo music played, along with some Wardruna which is a sorta Nordic/pagan/folk dark ambience group. And yeah, we totally used the Tristram music for when we were in town XD

*chuckles* Tristram isn't necessarily the greatest example of town music - it's a bit bleak/depressed, but it works for that kind of setting if you're looking for it. Now, when I think of lively, bustling, happy towns, I actually tend to think of the music from Dragon Quest - honestly, some of the music from that game made me laugh, it was like a musical caricature in my head.
I also liked some of the various town musical themes from FF9, Legend of Dragoon and Suikoden 1/2, if that helps? :b
