When things are looking grim, Cetus is the first to come up with one more trump card, risky as it be.
(You would not believe how long I’ve had this idea in my head. I’ve spent literally months on-and-off debating in my head whether or not to give the Astrals this kind of power. “People won’t like it”, “You’re ripping off Steven Universe, or even Dragon Ball Z!”, “Can’t you just stick to one idea?”, “It’s just dumb little drawings you make, stop overthinking it like it’s something big and important”, and many more are the thoughts that go through my mind.
But sometimes I just have to say “Fuck it, it’s my creation, I’ll do what I want with it!” and press on, hoping I’ve made the right choice. And all over what to do with characters I’ve made up for my art. Sheesh…)

Pretty much! An astral going supernova is like a last-resort tactic to give them a power boost, but it makes them rather uncontrollable and unpredictable until they pass out from exhaustion. While fusion combines two (maybe even more) astrals into one mind for a temporary major boost/augment to their powers (a fusion can only hold for around an hour at best before splitting).
Yeah, those can lead to a fusion splitting too. The time limit I mentioned is kinda tied into exhaustion too, since the whole process can be pretty taxing.
But for either fusion or supernova to be lethal to the user, they'd have to already be horrifically injured before they started.
