Is the purpose of the swiss style blade to help him move it easier or is it just a look?

It's designed to break apart on impact, the weapon is a spectral weapon, so instead of severely injuring the body, it rends your very spectral essence.
Also, I like the look of the blade that way, looks like it'd hurt more if you were stabbed or slashed with it.
