To my beloved Halley. I wrote this as a love theme between my girlfriend and I. Without her, I wouldn't have made it this far.

It has some resemblances with "I Need You Today", which is quite appropriate when you think about the theme of this particular piece
You should try some automations on your melodic instruments (flutes, violins, etc...). CC1 or CC11 (modwheel/expression) are usually assigned to dynamics (or vibrato control for CC1, but I don't think Mixcraft's native library handle this) and CC7 for volume. It'll help creating a less "static" sound and greatly improve the realism of your MIDI mockup.
If you are unsure of what amount of CC to put, sing the part and feel how much power on a scale from 1 to 127 you're putting in your vocal cords

I've heard MIDI (And I mean, General MIDI stuff, the MIDI sounds that play through Windows Media Player natively) sounding quite great (forget about orchestral, though) thanks to the automation of volumes and through carefuly selected sounds.
Getting better samples is a nice thing, indeed, but keep in mind that even 10k$ libraries actually need a lot of processing to sound great. Very few will sound real "out of the box" (actually none, but some offers pretty decent sound without much effort).
Percussion instrument are obviously the easier to program since the initial hit makes pretty much all the sound - the rest is sustain - , but the sustained sounds from instrument really ask for vibrato and dynamic control over time (the latter being #1 in priority, but no library proposes vibrato control without dynamics as well)
If you want any suggestion of library within your price range, you can poke me on skype - I'm there pretty much all day and night long. I'll answer as soon as I read the message. - but you can already improve your music a lot with your current samples by applying your CC some automation.
Keyboard input actually doesn't matter that much. It helps, but if you write your music onto scores or plan on doing so, a tempo automation works just as well (because in the end, that all a performance on a keyboard will add : grid offset and tempo variations) ; it takes a bit more time, but save you hours if you then export your MIDI to a notation software.
