Chevarus, the herdlord of the Altai Peryton herd, is one of the oldest known peryton living. He has roamed the forests along the foothills of the Delta mountain range for over 300 years and is still not believed to be more than a myth by local villages. A brilliant hunter, he stalks the flesh only of humans that stray too deep alone into the forests. Lying in wait, he and his herd ambush even small groups of humans, gaining their shadows several at a time to maintain their low profile, even going so far as to claw the ground with their talons to make it appear as if they were attacked by normal forest predators.
The Altai herd will sometimes wander out of the woods through meadows with tall grass, Chevarus at the head, folding their wings low to look like completely normal elk. Predators may stalk them to a point, but turn away as soon as they catch wind of the beasts true scent. As the least flashy of many of their kind, this particular species may well last well beyond the rest of their ilk.
