In addition to what Vanst said, they were introduced in Timothy Zahn's "Heir to the Empire" Star Wars novel trilogy.
They've probably been used elsewhere in the EU (Extended Universe; everything other than the movies, the SW4 radio play, and the movie novelizations), but I don't read all that many EU works so I couldn't say for sure.
