The Galahad transport was, in short, an alternative to the Helepolis Transport. This craft's commission was due to 2 major factors, First and foremost: While effective, the Heleopolis proved expensive and time-consuming to construct with only a handful of planets having the industrial infrastructure to construct such a craft in a reasonable amount of time, so the Galahad was designed to be smaller and much more capable of being built by colonies with a less-developed industrial base. The second point the Galahad was meant to address was the Helepolis's inability to defend itself while in-transit, as such the Galahad was built to act as it's own escort and to double as a star fighter in it's own right. While it did certainly live up to it's first goal of being a less resource-intensive alternative to the Helepolis, it's ability to double as a star fighter still left a lot to be desired and often still needs to have some kind of escort to protect it from more maneuverable opponents. Never the less the craft continues to be produced by several human interstellar empires and has been sold to allied alien empires for use in situations where smaller insertion teams are preferable.
