Personally, I pronounced gif with a G sound. So like Gift, but English is such an effed up language it's not improbable to say it could be pronounced the other way.

Actually, the creator of the file format has stated it IS pronounced "jif". I pronounce it "gif" anyway, because who the hell cares? ;P

I was always taught to pronounce it "jiff".

Hearing that the creator of the gif says that is correct is the most satisfying thing since being on the right side of The Dress debate!

Fact: Doc Brown was right, the prefix "giga" must be pronounced with a soft g. This is the NIST's official stance. Remember that when you're talking about computer parts, I gringe when people say "gheegabytes".

From what the creator of the Gif said...
It is supposed to be pronounced Jif.
But most have accepted the incorrect pronunciation to avoid confusing it for peanut butter.
