According to the author, Ru used to be a boy, but is now whatever gender you want her to be. Male, female, asexuated...
I chose female, because I think it fits her.
Some say boy, I do say girl.
Ben keeps the ambiguousness anyway, so it is the reader's choice.
Mako, on the other hand, is male according to the author.
