A few weeks ago, my friend
drewdracosune02 requested a commission from me, inspired from those Warframe gameplay videos I've posted on YouTube. He wanted me to draw a picture of our Warframes doing missions and such.
There's a catch: he wants our Warframes to have our fursonas' tails sticking out. This is despite the fact that we know that Warframes don't have tails. (Unless you're talking about Wukong, who does have a tail. And Valkyr in her exclusive Gersemi skin.) Unless DE got clever and create tail-themed Syandanas that actually attach to a Warframe's butt.
I disagreed with the idea at first. However, that also gave me the idea to further expand upon the idea. So I envisioned what if my fursona Marwan is a Warframe. Hence, this. =P I picked Ash Prime because he's my current main Warframe, since the day I assembled him last March.
This picture is not the actual commission itself. Rather, it's more like a ref so it's a lot easier for me to refer to the designs once I start doing the actual commission. I plan to do the same soon with Alex's fursona.

Thanks! =3 Well, unfortunately, it appears to be a common unwritten rule these days in video games that, if you have a tail, you're stuck as either an NPC or an enemy. =/ The main hero is always either human or very humanoid-looking tailless beings.
Which kinda sucks because, in the past, video games starring anthropomorphic animals as the main player character used to be way more common. The decline in popularity may have been partly stemmed from the increasing negative perception of furries in the West.

I think the pursuit for "realism" might one reason there are less cartoon animal characters in video games.
Our brain is tuned to recognize what a realistic human is like, and anything wrong would easily stand out . For video game systems that aren't powerful, using a cartoon character like an animal is a good way to get around this.
Now that we have video game systems that are much more powerful, we can render humans that are much closer to reality. Meanwhile, real time simulation and rendering of hair and fur is still a problem for computers, which makes realistic furry characters hard. And I think modern video games value technically impressive graphics that are close to reality, which is why there are many video games with realistic humanoid characters.
On top of that, most creators are human, so it makes sense that the human characters would be the default.
Just because you can have realistic humans doesn't mean it's a requirement, though.

Not necessarily have to be the case. If the graphic style is meant to be cartoony or have a certain unrealistic aesthetic to it, then there's no need to try to simulate realistic fur. You'll notice that even games with unusual exaggerated aesthetics still have humans as the main playable characters. This is even more true in Japan (and possibly even South Korea), where the majority of their games have that deliberately unrealistic anime aesthetic, but the player characters are still humans.
Older games, mostly 2D platformer titles, are often animal characters because, back then, game developers were cashing-in on the success of Sonic The Hedgehog.
Personally, I don't care if I'm playing as humans, anyway. What matters most is that the game is still fun to play.

there's still a few games that have characters that have tails, Paladins released a dragon character with a pretty big tail recently. And then there's Pokken tournament, a fighting game with Pokemon! Though there is a severe lack of playable characters that have tails which is a shame for someone like me who has a tail fetish ;_;
I've just seen that gameplay footage of that new dragon champion in Paladins. He looks badass! O_O And not just the tail, which I don't think he'll be using in battle except to look cool (unless I'm mistaken and I'm just not seeing it, because players rarely melee unless they ran out of ammo). In my opinion, with fantastic character designs like that, Paladins would've worked better as a third-person shooter instead, because many players would really love to see their own player characters on screen being badass and such. (You can ride a horse, which makes it temporarily third-person view, but that's it.)
I agree, with how little I get to see Drogoz's tail is hard for me to appreciate it, thankfully it looks sexy when mounted on the horse and I can see it when other characters play the character.
Games definitely need more characters with tails, one game I've been playing recently is Battleborn, and they have a lot of crazy characters, and yet NONE of them have a long tail! It's crazy and pisses me off...still a good game though.
