The town of Pripyat in what was at the time the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic had a maximum population of 50,000 before the Chernobyl Reactor.
There were instances during the reactor meltdown of staff at the nuclear plant who actually went into irradiated areas to keep the reactor from reaching critical mass and having a meltdown. They went in knowing that they would almost assuredly receive lethal doses of radiation and slowly die after days of agonizing pain from radiation sickness.
But they knew this and they knew they had to stop the meltdown and went in anyway. The former Soviet Union owes them all Orders of Lenin and the Ukrainian government owes them a lot more than that.
