First Love
(3833 words)
Mera sighed to herself as she walked up to the door of the apartment. Her stomach rumbled at her angrily. She had passed up the perfect chance to snag a mouse that had been walking through the park. She had been successful in curbing her predatory tendencies today, but how long would it last this time? How long before the pit in her stomach became too much to ignore?
She reached into her pocket for her keys, but found the door to already be unlocked. She walked into the apartment, taking off her coat and hanging it on one of the pegs installed on the wall just inside the door.
She immediately sensed that something was amiss. It was quiet, but a sort of oppressive, heavy quiet that settled over the apartment like a thick blanket. Mera’s ears twitched, and after a moment, she heard it: muffled noises coming from the back of the apartment. Mera swallowed hard, then headed towards the sounds to investigate.
The front room of the small apartment served as both the living room and the kitchen, seamlessly changing from on to the other. While this did make the place feel a bit cramped at times, it did mean that you could see the TV from the kitchen table, so that could be convenient. Not that Mera used that table very often, especially as it was covered with bits of food and dirty plates that had been sitting there long enough to become stuck in place. Her roommate was not the cleanliest person.
Behind the kitchen area, a small hallway led to a bathroom and two small bedrooms, each just large enough for a bed and a dresser.
The noises were coming from Lilith’s bedroom.
Mera hesitated outside. She didn’t want to intrude on her roommate’s privacy, but she could hear muffled noises that definitely sounded distressed. What if Lilith was in trouble?
Mera placed her hand on the door, turned the handle slowly, and eased it open to peer inside.
Lilith’s room looked as it always did: like a tornado had recently passed through. Several of the dresser drawers hung open, and clothes were scattered about on the floor. And not all of them belonged to Lilith; Mera saw a pair of jeans that were definitely too small.
Mera’s eyes roamed up to the bed, where she saw her roommate. And Lilith was not alone.
It was definitely Lilith sitting up on the bed. Even though Mera was looking at her back, the hyena cut a figure that was hard to miss. While Mera would never have described Lilith as “fat,” the hyena could definitely be called “heavy,” especially around the gut area. Her figure was one of healthy fullness, all soft curves with a hint of powerful muscle underneath. Even now, some part of Mera couldn’t help but admire it a little.
Lilith certainly dwarfed the other female, a rabbit with an hourglass figure that would likely have been called “full-figured” in another circumstance, but barely qualified for “skinny” when compared to Lilith. Mera was fairly certain that if Lilith were to lay down on top of the girl, she would disappear entirely.
At the moment, the rabbit was lying on her back on the bed, with Lilith straddling her hips. The hyena had removed her shirt, though she was still wearing her bra and was fully dressed in jeans below the waist. The rabbit, however, was naked.
Heat creeped up Mera’s face, and at first she thought she had stumbled upon Lilith in a tryst. But then she realized that the muffled, distressed noises she had heard earlier were coming from the rabbit. The rabbit’s legs were tied together at the ankles, and her arms appeared to be bound behind her back.
And she had an apple stuffed in her mouth.
Mera swallowed.
“That’s right, struggle all you want,” Lilith said, not seeming to have noticed Mera spying from the door. The hyena leaned down and licked the rabbit’s face, causing the girl to make a muffled noise of protest. “Mmm… delicious. I can’t wait to have you inside me.” Lilith began licking her way down the girl’s body, moving from her cheek, to her chin, to her collarbone.
Mera knew that she should shut the door and retreat, but instead she stared in a sort of shocked fascination. When she hunted, she made it as quick as possible. But Lilith prolonged the ordeal, teasing and mocking her prey.
She slowly made her way down the rabbit’s body, running her tongue across the female’s calves before moving back into a kneeling position. She picked up the rabbit’s feet by the ankles, lifting them to her mouth and then running her tongue along the bottom of one large foot in a long, slow lick, prompting a series of squirms from the rabbit.
Then Lilith opened her mouth wide and slid the rabbit’s feet inside. She left them there for a bit, masticating them and running her tongue over them, causing the rabbit to squirm and continue her muffled protests. Then, finally, with a loud, wet swallow, she pulled the rabbit’s feet into her gullet.
The rabbit continued to struggle, of course, but with her arms tied, there was very little she could do as Lilith slowly swallowed her legs, taking time to lick and taste every inch of them as she went. The rabbit’s calves disappeared into Lilith’s mouth, followed by her thighs. The hyena’s throat bulged out as it stretched to accommodate her prey.
Mera’s breath was coming heavy. She didn’t usually… watch other predators eat. She knew that Lilith was a predator, of course, but Mera usually tried to make herself scarce if she knew that the hyena would be eating.
Lilith swallowed again, and the rabbit’s hips were lifted from the bed. The action paused for a moment, and the rabbit stared at Lilith — perhaps she believed the predator had bitten off more than she could chew? But then Lilith swallowed again, using her hands to help work the hips into her mouth, inch by inch. Her tongue continued its exploratory tasting, eliciting a muffled squeak from the rabbit. After a bit of work, the rabbit’s hips popped into the hyena’s mouth.
The rabbit resumed her squirming — after all, her hips were the widest part of her body, and if Lilith could manage those, nothing else was going to stop her.
Lilith waited for a minute, catching her breath, perhaps. Then she swallowed again, gulping down the rabbit’s flat stomach, her rear end making a sizable bulge in the hyena’s throat.
Mera swallowed. The rabbit’s toes were probably entering Lilith’s stomach by now. She could practically feel them herself, and her stomach rumbled audibly. She froze, her hand clenched on the doorknob.
Lilith didn’t seem to notice. She continued swallowing, making sure the rabbit’s bound hands entered her mouth so they wouldn’t cause a problem later. Mera thought she caught the glimpse of something small in the rabbit’s hands, but they disappeared into Lilith’s mouth before she could get a closer look.
Lilith slowly made her way up her prey’s torso, causing more of her to disappear into her gullet with every gulp. She had to pause again when she reached the rabbit’s chest, which posed a rather substantial barrier. This one, however, was an easier barrier than her hips to nullify — Lilith could reach up and use her hands to help knead the soft orbs into her mouth, causing another flurry of muffled squeaks and wiggles from the rabbit. Soon she had the rabbit’s chest in her maw.
Only the rabbit’s shoulders and head were on the outside. The rabbit had mostly given up on struggling — what could she do at this point, after all? Tears were streaming down her face, and her shoulders heaved as she sobbed.
Lilith was able to lean back now, tilting her head up to allow gravity to assist and to provide the rabbit with a straight path to her final destination. The rabbit’s curves shown through Lilith’s body, running down her chest and disappearing into her stomach area.
With a wet gluk, Lilith pulled the rabbit’s head into her mouth. She turned her head slightly, and Mera could make out the silhouette in the dim light of the rabbit’s muzzle, contained entirely within Lilith’s. The hyena reached in, and with a tug, removed the apple from the rabbit’s mouth. She saw Lilith’s tongue lick over the rabbit’s nose, tasting her one last time before it pushed her back and Lilith’s muzzle closed.
She tilted her head back, and with one final swallow, the bulge in Lilith’s chest slid down, settling into her gut. Lilith was large enough that it didn’t make a significant difference — if not for the squirming, an onlooker might not have been able to tell that the hyena had a whole person trapped in her stomach.
Lilith opened her mouth and let out a loud, echoing belch. She didn’t even try to hold it in, letting it rip out over the course of several seconds. Just as Mera started to wonder if Lilith was going to run out of air, the belch stopped, and Lilith turned her head.
“Enjoy the show?”
Mera’s heart leapt into her throat. “I-I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to…”
As she started to back off, however, Lilith said, “Get in here, girl.” The hyena turned herself around, propping her upper body against the headboard of the bed. She leaned back, resting one hand on her gut.
Mera shook her head. “I don’t…”
“Get in here,” Lilith commanded again. “And turn the light on while you’re at it.”
Mera did as instructed, stepping into the small bedroom and flipping the light switch on, giving her an even better view of Lilith’s stomach. She could see the faint bulges of the rabbit struggling inside, and her keen ears could easily pick up the muffled screams and cries of anguish. The sounds made a knot form in her throat.
Lilith opened her mouth to speak, but then her eyes widened. Instead of words, another loud belch escaped her lips. A small, rectangular object flew out of Lilith’s mouth, landing with a bounce on her stomach. Lilith reached down and picked up a small cell phone. “Huh,” she said. “I thought I took this from her. Guess she must’ve grabbed it before I swallowed her. She must have thought she could call for help.”
Lilith shrugged, then set the cell phone on her bedside table next to the apple. She turned her gaze back to Mera, narrowing her eyes and gesturing in the bat’s direction. “Alright,” she said, her tone matter-of-fact. “What the hell is all this?”
Mera furrowed her brow. “W-what do you mean?”
“I mean… this!” She waved her hand in Mera’s direction. “Your reaction. We’re preds, Mera. I was eating dinner. I get that it was kind of awkward that you walked in on me, but if you wanted to watch, you could have just knocked on the door and come in. And you shouldn’t have to look… so damn uncomfortable!”
“I just… I didn’t want to bother you.”
“Nuh-uh. This was more than that. Hell, half the time you were standing in the door, I couldn’t tell if you were going to start touching yourself or run away screaming.” Mera blushed, but Lilith ignored it and continued her rant. “This isn’t something clandestine, girl. It’s just dinner. You do the same thing! I’ve seen you come home with a belly full of prey.”
Mera tried to keep meeting Lilith’s eyes, but she couldn’t. Her gaze dropped to the floor. “It’s not… it’s not the same for me.”
“How is it ‘not the same’ for you?” Lilith demanded.
Mera swallowed hard, then forced herself to meet Lilith’s gaze again.

Mera stared at the small plate in front of her. Several apples stared back at her.
After the apples refused to back down from their staring contest for several minutes, Mera finally spoke. “Mom… I can’t.”
Mera’s mother looked up from her own plate at the other end of the table. “Eat your dinner, Mera.”
“I can’t,” Mera said again. “It’ll make me sick.”
“You just need to acclimatize your body. Get it used to eating fruit.”
“I’ve tried,” Mera insisted. “It’s not working. I still get sick! Every single time. I can’t keep doing this.”
“Then what are you going to do!?” Mera’s mother banged her hand on the table as she stood up from her chair. “Go ‘hunting?’ Find some poor, defenseless prey and put them through the torture of digesting them alive!?”
Mera’s lip quivered.
Her mother walked around the table towards her. “This has got to stop, Mera. You’ve got to think of the family. They won’t say anything, but you’re making everyone uncomfortable.”
Mera’s voice was barely a whisper. “Then I’ll leave.”
“What?”
Mera stood up so fast she knocked her chair over. She towered over her mother, just like she towered over the rest of the family. “Then. I’ll. Leave.”
“And go where? You’re a flying fox. Who ever heard of one of us out on our own? Now eat your fruit, pup.”
Mera looked back down at the fruit. She thought about her family — about the way they looked at her. And she made up her mind.

RJ woke to the sound of knocking at his door. He couldn’t not hear it, of course; the fennec fox’s large ears picked up everything. Grumbling to himself, he climbed out of bed, pulled on a pair of sweatpants, and stumbled across his apartment to the front door. Tired as he was, he knew he had to remain wary. Leaving the chain on the door, he cracked it open and peeked out. “Yes? Who is…”
He froze mid-sentence. Standing in the rain outside his door was a bat. She looked soaked to the bone, and was hunched over, rubbing one arm as though embarrassed.
“M-Mera?”
“RJ?” Mera said. “I… I need a place to stay.”
---
Mera sat on RJ’s couch, the thick comforter wrapped tightly around her. A pile of wet towels sat on the floor nearby.
RJ approached from the kitchen area — it couldn’t really be called a kitchen, it was really more of a small alcove with a refrigerator, a microwave, and an oven, and only two thirds of those appliances had a tendency to be working at any given time. He handed Mera a steaming mug, and she took it carefully, holding it under her nose and taking in the warm scent of hot chocolate. “Thank you,” she said.
“No problem. So where are your things?”
Mera glanced down at the small backpack sitting next to the pile of towels.
“That it? That’s all you brought with you?”
“Well, I… I’m sorry, RJ. I-I don’t want to be any trouble for you. I know your place is small, you’re just the only person I could think of. I can sleep on the couch! And I’ll try to find somewhere else so I can get out of your hair as soon as I can. I just… I just really need… Somewhere to…”
“Hey.” RJ’s voice comforted her more than the blanket. “You can stay here as long as you need, Mera. And I’ll take the couch.”
“But…”
“No buts,” he said. “You just finish your hot chocolate and I’ll get things ready for you.”
---
Mera scanned the classifieds section of the newspaper. Nothing. At least, nothing that she thought she could do.
Her stomach rumbled. She was going to have to feed soon, she knew. But she wanted to put it off at least another day or two if she could.
The door to the apartment opened and RJ walked in. For not the first time in the last few weeks, Mera found herself inexplicably blushing. “Welcome back, RJ!” She said. “How did your final go?”
“Fine, I think. I won’t really know until the professor posts the grades next week.”
Mera nodded. She took a deep breath. “RJ, I want to talk to you.”
RJ sensed the serious note in her voice. He set down his things and sat down on the couch next to her. “What is it, Mera?”
“I just… I want to thank you.”
RJ smiled. “Mera, you know that you’re no imposition…”
Mera held up a hand, and RJ stopped. With her gaze fixed firmly on the floor, Mera continued. “Please… I want to say this. You’ve been kind to me these last two weeks, RJ. I just want you to understand what that means to me. No one’s ever treated me like this before. Even my own family treated me like an outsider. For the first time in my life, I feel… like I belong somewhere. You… every time I see you, I feel like… like…” At a loss for words, she looked at RJ.
RJ, however, had decided on a better conveyance than words for what Mera was trying to say. He leaned in and kissed her.
Mera’s eyes went wide as their muzzles pressed together. Her heart seemed to stop beating for a moment.
RJ pulled back, blushing. “S-sorry,” he said. “I hope I didn’t…”
This time, Mera kissed him.
The kiss quickly grew more passionate as feelings that had been percolating for weeks, and maybe for the years they had known each other before this, now bubbled to the surface.
Prey.
Mera felt RJ’s tongue enter her muzzle, scraping against her teeth. She was careful not to bite it by accident.
There’s prey here.
Clothes began coming off, creating a growing pile on the floor next to the couch. Neither of them even suggested stopping long enough to move this back to the bedroom.
Your stomach is empty. Fill it. There’s prey here.
Mera shoved the naked fennec down onto the couch, straddling him. Her hands were on his shoulders, her weight holding him in place.
Keeping him from escaping.
“M-Mera?” He asked. “Are you okay?”
She didn’t even hear it.
Mera opened her mouth wide and shoved his head inside.
The little fox started to struggle, putting his hands on her shoulders and trying to push her off, but she had her prey right where she wanted him. She swallowed, her sharp fangs pricking his shoulders as her tongue pushed his head into her gullet, causing her throat to bulge out. No longer needing to use her hands to hold him down, she used them to pin his arms to his side.
He tried to kick her off, but she was stronger than him. He didn’t stand a chance.
She licked over his collarbone, savoring his flavor. Then she swallowed again, his chest sliding against her tongue. She gulped him deeper and deeper with a predatory urgency.
He continued to fight, but his situation was growing more grave by the second. With her gullet now pinning his arms to his side, her hands were free to hold his legs and prevent him from kicking. She passed her tongue over his stomach and then swallowed up his hips.
She was able to lean back now, only the fennec’s kicking legs and bushy tail hanging from her mouth. With a few more swallows, his thighs slid into her mouth, followed by the rest of his legs. With only his feet hanging out of her mouth, she ran her long tongue over his toes for one last taste before she clicked her teeth shut, sending him down to her belly.
She lay back on the couch, both hands resting on her stomach, which bulged out in front of her. The fox continued to struggle, and she let out a soft moan, licking her teeth to catch the last of the flavor still lingering there.
Mera lay still for a moment. Her eyes widened.
“Oh no… oh no!”
She sat up straight, hands still on her belly. “RJ? RJ! Can you hear me!?”
The voice was muffled, but Mera could make it out if she strained her ears. “Mera?”
“RJ!” Mera was in a panic. What was she going to do!? “RJ, I’m so sorry! I… I’ll… I’ll do something! I’ll…”
“Mera,” RJ’s voice sounded surprisingly calm. “It’s okay.”
“What!?”
“I said ‘it’s okay.’ I understand.”
“No, you don’t,” she said. “I just… something came over me…”
“You haven’t eaten since you got here,” RJ said.
That brought Mera up short. “Y-you knew?”
“You’ve been starving yourself. And here I was, a tasty little fox. I even stripped down for you. No wonder you lost control.”
“B-but…”
Mera heard what sounded like a laugh. “I thought I was going to get inside you — guess I kind of did, didn’t I?”
“RJ…” Mera’s voice quivered. “I can’t… I can’t just let you…”
“Mera, remember that time when we were kids? You ate that rabbit and felt super bad about it. We tried everything we could think of to get you to spit it back out. Nothing worked, not even medicine. Once your stomach had its prey, it wouldn’t let it go.”
“But…”
“It’s okay. This is part of who you are. I just… happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Put myself there, really. It’s my own fault. Just don’t blame yourself, okay?”
“B-but…” Mera swallowed hard. She knew he was right. Tears streamed down her cheeks as she held her stomach. “I’m so, so sorry.”
She felt his hand, through the flesh and fur of her stomach, as it pressed out against hers.
---
“So that’s it,” Mera said, her voice quavering. She blinked, trying to hold back the wetness she could feel in her eyes. “He was the first person to ever really care about me… and I k-killed him for it.”
Lilith looked at her from her position on the bed, her expression inscrutable. Then she turned, put her feet on the floor, and hefted herself up. She walked up to Mera, stopping just in front of her, their bodies only inches apart.
“Lilith…” Mera started.
Before she could say anything else, she suddenly found herself wrapped in a hug. Lilith’s strong arms squeezed her close, and at first she blushed, both because she could feel the rabbit still struggling in the hyena’s belly and because Mera was very aware that her roommate was still not wearing a shirt. But then she gave herself into the hug, pressing her face into the soft fur of Lilith’s upper chest and letting the tears flow.
“It’s okay,” Lilith said, patting Mera’s back softly. “You’re hungry, aren’t you?”
“Y-yes,” Mera sobbed. She was starving.
“Then we’ll get you some food. I’ll come help you hunt. Would you like that?”
Mera nodded, sniffling.
Neither of them made a move to go anywhere yet, though. Mera just let Lilith hold her, leaning into the strong hyena’s embrace.
She hadn’t felt so comfortable in years.

---
RJ woke to the sound of knocking at his door.
She hadn’t felt so comfortable in years.

great story, really great, at first i was kind of undecided about ending to read it (im not so much a voyeurism fan) but when the RJ story started i got kind of engaged with it and the end man, it made me sad, excited and moved at the same time, all on the last paragraphs of both stories :3 just amazing
That's an interesting question, and probably deserves a longer answer! But here's a relatively short one: it depends on which setting we're talking about. Though I do have the occasional exception, I usually write my stories in one of three settings:
In my "The Den" setting, which includes Lindsay, Alex, and Rox, being a pred is considered legal, but it's uncouth to talk about it in polite conversation. Most prey know it happens, but have never seen it themselves and probably have a "it could never happen to me" kind of mentality. Preds also form less than 5% of the population, and a lot of preds are pretty solitary, so there isn't a lot of opportunity for predation to come up in casual conversation. There are a number of laws and rules around the subject, too: preds are not allowed to eat someone for any kind of personal gain other than food (you can't, for example, eat someone because you're worried they'll get a promotion you want,) you're not supposed to eat people you know, and prey are allowed to defend themselves by any means available to them. All of these rules are surely abused, of course, but the majority of people play things straight. There has also been some talk of preds being required to get a predator license if they want to eat people, though that's an idea I'm still toying with.
In my "Modern/Advanced" setting, vore is 100% allowed and generally accepted. There are similar rules to The Den setting, though slightly more lax: preds are allowed to eat people, prey are allowed to defend themselves. But in this setting, you'd be much more likely to see, say, someone being eaten in a diner or on the sidewalk, or a pred dragging a prey home to have dinner in a more private setting, and this wouldn't be looked at as unusual. Tammi, Miranda, and Marcus are from this setting.
In my "Beast Nation" setting, the legality of eating another person varies regionally. In some places, especially the larger cities towards the eastern side of the Nation, it's highly looked down on and often illegal. Other places take a more "wild" approach and view it as natural. Fia, Elena, Tess, and Cerise are from this setting.
For more information on my characters and settings, you can check here and here. Thanks for the question!
(By the way, I should probably mention that this particular story doesn't take place in any of my settings, as it was a commission and is set in a world of
rakshajareth's creation.)

Well, call me paranoid, but if I was in your Modern setting, I'd probably carry a knife on me, especially if I saw a chipmunk coming the other way.
I just read your story The Stream. It's that stuff I find... I dunno, interesting, confusing and horrifying all at the same time. Casually manipulating and killing someone like that, and doing it with a smile while leaving behind a family or lover, grieving and heartbroken. It brings all sorts of questions to mind, like how can friends just let each other die like in The Wager, and do prey live in fear, knowing that when they step out their door, it might be the last time.
Perhaps I'm overthinking.
Have you ever thought about doing a story involving a pred-killing vigilante, a la Red Hood?

It's funny, because every story you've mentioned has been a commission, and thus not my idea in the first place. With regards to the knife, I imagine that checking your prey for that kind of thing before eating them would be very important to a pred.
I will probably not ever write a story about a pred-killing vigilante. While, as I said, you have people of all sorts of opinions to make a world, it doesn't seem like the kind of story I would really be interested in writing, and I feel it would undermine the idea that exists in all my settings that these worlds have a sense of morality that is simply alien to the way normal humans think.
