"Mesdames et Messieurs , nous nous excusons pour la gêne occasionnée . En raison de la météo à destination, Air Canada vol 195 avec le service à Vancouver va maintenant sortirait à 21 heures 30. Ladies and gentlemen, we apologize for the inconvenience. Due to weather at our destination, Air Canada Flight 195 with service to Vancouver will now be departing at 9:30 pm.”
The airport announcement was met by groans and muttering in the Maple Leaf Lounge, and JC sighed as he took a slow, annoyed draw from his glass of Malbec. This was the second flight delay, and they would now be getting into Vancouver much later than he had planned. He sighed again, and opened his laptop, determined to make the most of his time there; at least he could get some work done on the proposal while they…
Tic
He heard it rather than felt it. The soft clack of an impact against his horn, followed by the patter of a small nut on the carpet beside him. He blinked, and then heard it again, with a soft, nearly imperceptible jolt. Another nut went tumbling to the floor to land by his feet. There was a soft rustling of a bag from the seat beside him.
“Jamie,” he said evenly, “ostie de marde, I swear to God…”
Tic
“I will take that bag and shove it so far up your ass you’ll be coughing it up,” JC promised.
“Ha ha, nuts in my ass. You wish,” snorted Jamie, ignoring the look from a man at a desk not far away. He ruffled through the bag again. “You heard them. French and English. Flight’s delayed. Gotta occupy my time somehow. Why are we here instead of the bar?”
“Cause it’s nicer,” said JC, going back to his computer. “And I earned those damn status miles to get me lounge access so I am damn well going to use them. Go turn the TV to the game. No one will mind.”
“Maybe in a bit,” said Jamie. He popped a nut in his mouth and took a swig of his beer. “This plus a five hour flight to Vancouver. Hope it’s worth it. Your country’s too fuckin’ big.”
He’d asked Isaiah, initially; a trip with him to Vancouver while he met with some engineers there for a pipeline project. But the rhino had been busy and JC had already gotten an extra ticket, so he’d opened it up to Jamie. And after a long flight from Albuquerque to Chicago and then to Montreal for a brief meeting before heading to the west coast, with Jamie being…well, Jamie the whole way…
“Go turn on the game,” JC said again. “I just want to finish this up and then I’ll come join you.”
“Nah,” Jamie grinned. “I’m good. Gonna grab another beer though. Get you another glass of wine?”
JC smiled, oddly touched by the gesture. Maybe this wouldn't be so bad after all. “Non, merci.”
The oryx got up and went to the fridge again; he was back in a flash, and JC took another draw from his wine before immersing himself in the file again. Just a few edits here and there...
Tic
JC said something colourful.
“Ha ha, tabernak,” laughed Jamie.

I got delayed on a recent flight and this idea came to my head. And
bgn rose to the occasion tremendously. He spent a long time on this and I'm grateful; he's taken a very real place and turned it into a very vibrant and colourful picture, brining both of our characters to life. Thank you so much!
