Within a few weeks, Khaz had done all the training he needed to, and already fulfilled a couple of contracts. He was surprised at how capable he was of doing such a job…how much he was actually starting to enjoy it.
What helped in adapting to this new life was the company he kept. The other assassins were unexpectedly friendly and cheerful despite their chosen profession. His mentor and trainer was especially boastful in his work, a scrawny green Utahraptor, gleefully describing his kills and sharing stories of past contracts. One such story included killing the previous king of Poda.
He held himself in high regard, because he was the only one to kill something of such high ranking.
Khaz kept quiet and agreed for the sake of everyone around. Though when he returned home to Pilu, he found himself laughing with her about it, a king felt insignificant to their dragon.
Pilu was back in business, making sure lazy guild members were pulling their share rather than slacking off by the bar, running her own jobs, as well as helping to keep the guild running.
Chompy was extremely happy that she had returned home, to help keep things going. Especially since he was planning to retire soon.
The day came when he finally called the guild together and declared her the new leader, and that he would be retiring, he had his sights set on a small fishing village out beyond the borders of Paleo city, there he’d happily spend the rest of his life doing whatever quaint job he might find there.
He left everything to Pilu, the guild, the house, even the butcher’s shop he owned and ran next door. He packed a few of his things and left towards Paleo City using the carts, accompanied by Khaz so he could take the cart back afterwards. Pilu wasn’t able to see him leave, due to being out on a job.
Khaz and Chompy got out of the cart once they reached the end of the track.
Before popping the trap door open, Chompy turned to Khaz with a grin. “Thank you, Khaz, for making my daughter smile. Let her know I said goodbye, would you?”
Khaz nodded. “Of course.” He held out a hand for a handshake. “I’m sure we’ll see you again eventually.”
Chompy laughed and instead of shaking his hand, brought him in for a hug. “I’ll be expecting a family dinner at some point.” He said, patting Khaz on the back before they both backed up from the hug. “You better take good care of her.” He added, before going up a small flight of stairs at the end of the tunnel they were in and popping open a trap door.
“I will!” Khaz said, and waved goodbye as Chompy left. Then proceeded back to the guild hideout with the mine cart.
Chompy carefully closed the trap door again, the entrance this time being a paving stone behind the farmhouse of one of their guild members just outside of Paleo City.
He threw the bag he was carrying over his shoulder and began the long walk ahead of him to get to the fishing village.
It took a few days spent walking endlessly, and nights spent camping on the side of the road, but eventually he did make it. The salty sea breeze was inviting and invigorating, he found his way to a small tavern by the docks, he entered and ordered something to eat.
While waiting for his meal, he scanned the room, quietly studying the people sitting around. He stopped when he noticed a familiar face, one he hadn’t seen in ages, and was certainly glad to see again.
He went over to her table, and placed a hand on the chair opposite to hers. “At first I thought it wasn’t you, without all that armor on. Mind if I sit down, Nomminus?”
Nomminus looked up from her plate, surprised to see him. “Chompy! Of course, sit down!” she said excitedly. “I wasn’t expecting to see you here.”
Chompy laughed. “I wasn’t expecting you either, what brings you here? I thought you were out exploring still?”
Nomminus took a drink from her mug before answering, washing down any food still in her mouth. “I was travelling with the Shadow Wizard for a bit, eventually he finished collecting everything he needed to and had no use of adventures. I decided instead of continuing on my own, I’d finally retire. I made a promise to myself years ago that if I ever did, I’d come live here.”
Chompy grinned. “Well as it just so happens, I picked this place as my retirement spot. So I guess we’ll be seeing more of each other.”
Nomminus laughed cheerfully. “I’m sure we will, so. Do you have a house here then?”
Chompy shook his head. “Not yet, I was just going to rent a room tonight, and start my search tomorrow.”
“Well, the house I bought has an extra bed room. It’s got a fantastic view too! I’d be happy to share it.” Nomminus said.
Finally, Chompy’s meal was brought to him, a large piece of cooked fish and fried potatoes. He excitedly dug in to it. “Wherefh isf the housefh?” he asked with a mouth full of food.
“A small island not too far off the docks.” Nomminus answered.
“You own an island?” Chompy asked, surprised as to how she could afford such a thing. “How’d you pay for that?”
Nomminus laughed. “Well, it’s not much of an island, more like a mound just above sea level and large enough to hold a house.” She answered. “And, adventuring can be great for the pockets.”
Chompy took another bite of his meal and nodded. “I’m sure you found some great treasures.” He couldn’t help but fantasise about her owning some great horde of trinkets and rare artifacts, were she not a friend, and he was not leaving his thieving days behind him, he would have painted a target on her back for the guild.
“Quite a few! Most returned to their rightful owners, or sold to collectors in various towns.” Nomminus answered. “Though I do have a few things I’ve had the pleasure of keeping.”
Chompy thought to ask about some of the treasures sold or returned, maybe send word to the guild about them. But decided against it, reminding himself he was retired and shouldn’t be bothered with thievery.
Their conversation drew long into the day, and as the sun made its descent, they eventually left the tavern and headed to Nommy’s little island home. Taking a small row boat over from the pier. They docked at the island within a few minutes. Chompy jumped out first and tied it securely to the moorings.
He extended a hand to Nomminus and helped her out of the boat.
“You know; you look pretty good without all that armor on.” He said with a grin.
Nomminus laughed. “And you don’t look too terrible without your bloody butcher’s apron.”
The proceeded into the house, Nomminus giving Chompy a quick tour, it wasn’t a large house, but still comfortable. She showed him to the extra bedroom, where he dropped his bag of personal items on the bed.
“It’s a pretty nice place.” Chompy said.
“It is! Isn’t it? Nice an quiet.” Nomminus said, “I’ll leave you to unpack, if you need me, I’ll be out behind the house, enjoying the sunset.” She then took her leave.
Chompy opened his bag, there wasn’t too much, a couple of extra clothes, which he put in a small dresser opposite the bed, a shimmering silver necklace with a pendant in the shape of a star, something once belonging to his late wife that he loved so dearly. He placed it on the side table by his bed
The last was a small wooden dagger that he set on top of the dresser. It was the dagger he had given to Pilu when she first expressed interest in wanting to learn how to use one.
He looked around the room and took a deep, calming breath. Now he was home, now it was a little paradise to relax in.
He left his bedroom, into the main living space of the house, and then out the front door. He went around the back of the house to find Nomminus sitting at the end of a small dock, looking out across the water.
He approached and sat down beside her, placing a hand on hers. “Thank you, for letting me take that other room.”
Nomminus turned to look at him and nodded, acknowledging his hand, but not saying anything about it. “You’re welcome.” She then looked back out over the water. “It’s hard to see until the sun starts to set, but if you look carefully on a clear day with calm waves, you can see a silhouette of Mammalia’s mountains against the last of the day’s light.”
Chompy looked out ahead, squinting his eyes, it took a bit to make it out, but he could see the faint outline of jagged peaks against the amber sky.
“Are they friendly?” he asked.
“Oh yes!” Nomminus smiled. “Some of the kindest creatures I’ve ever met.”
“You said you explored with the wizard? Did he ever show you what he really looks like?” Chompy wondered.
Nommy laughed. “Nope! We trekked through that whole mountain range together, and not once did his cloak or hood come off while I was looking.”
“Did you ever ask him why he hides his appearance?”
“He said in time, he may one day reveal himself, but magic is and always should be the focus, not the look of the one casting it.”
“I see.”
They both sat quietly, ankles submerged in the water, watching the light fade from the sky. The far away mountains became a bit more visible, before disappearing completely as the sun shone its last light for the day.
The air soon became somewhat frigid, as did the water, they decided to head back inside.
In the living room of the house there was an old stone fireplace, Nomminus lit a fire and they both sat around it, she shared stories of her time over in that strange land, while he listened intently to every word, when mention of how well his daughter fought during that issue with the Sabers, he couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride.
Their conversation drew on, and eventually both grew tired and went to their beds.
Looking forward to another day in paradise, while also hoping their kids would be okay without them.
