Football Cubs episode 38 - Time to go!
It's never fun to have to say goodbye...
Football primer: At the end of the season, the bottom three clubs in the table are relegated to the division below and replaced in the next Premier League season by the top three teams in that division. It's now confirmed that Aston Villa are guaranteed to finish in the relegation zone (after losing their ninth consecutive game last weekend), so they have to say goodbye to all their Premier League friends for a year at least.
So we say goodbye to Aston Villa after 28 years of top-division football. They were founding members of the football league back in 1888 and have played in the top division for 105 of the 117 seasons that the league has been running (it was suspended during the two world wars, so it's not quite continuous) - a record beaten only by Everton, who have only ever spent four seasons outside the top flight. Newcastle and Sunderland, at least one of whom seems certain to be relegated too, are in joint seventh place on the most-top-division-seasons-played list, both in their 85th season as a top-flight club, so the 'old guard' are really having troubles this year.
Villa still have to play their remaining four games, of course, starting with Southampton this weekend and finishing on the final day of the season with Arsenal, who haven't been relegated for longer than anyone can remember - they've been a constant presence in the top flight since 1919!
Meanwhile, the teams have been catching up with those postponed games in midweek, so most of them have now played 34 - this weekend's game between Everton and Crystal Palace was brought forward since they're both playing in FA Cup semi finals, so Palace have played one more league game than anyone else. It'll all straighten itself out by the end of the season.
