Beth’s family died when she was younger, leaving her more or less alone for a good chunk of her childhood and adolescence. Sure, there were foster families and orphanages, but she never had a family she could call her own.
When she went to work as a manager for Al’s company, she was expecting just another short-term job that she’d eventually be let go from. But she excelled at her work, and more than that, she felt like she finally belonged somewhere.
When she was forcefully evicted from her apartment, Al was able to offer her the spare bedroom in the house where he and his family lived. Just until she got back on her hooves, she assured him. But she never really found anything else that worked for her. This apartment was too expensive, that one was too far away from work. Al said there was no rush; that she didn’t have to even leave if she didn’t want to. The family always had room for another. Talk of finding a place stopped soon after that.
Beth finally had a family, even though nothing was really official or on paper. It’s family all the same, though, and even in those darker moments when she remembers what she lost, she knows there’s a new family there to pick her back up.
