Endless Realms bestiary - Topaz Dragon
Bestiary artwork for Endless Realms, a D&D-like "pen and paper" fantasy RPG I'm working for.
Topaz - mental, spiritual and psionic power
Differing from other dragon concepts in the game so far, this dragon isn't a demigod or avatar of a particular elemental or cosmic force. For the gemstone dragons, I was given almost entirely free reign, so I decided to take inspiration from historical and pagan lore.
Since we already had a few orangeish coloured dragons, we decided to go with blue topaz. In my mind, Topaz is basically the mage-priest of dragons, master of all things magical and arcane - I couldn't help but give him an Oriental "dragon beard," it just really seemed to suit him :3

A malicious sect of psionic monks have a legend that tells of entire mindscape created by the eldest wyrm among the Topaz dragons. He who forever slumbers protects various secrets within this mindscape, secrets that could topple kingdoms and ruin worlds if discovered. The only gateway into the mindscape is through one's mind, but the legend also tells of another gateway; one which lies within the dream realm where the mind is cast when the mind is at rest. Can you and your allies find this gateway before the monks do and bring into the world that which was not meant for it?
Rough idea for a synopsis of an adventure which I thought of when I saw this piece. =P

That's pretty awesome, thanks for sharing! Heh, reminds me of an opening questline we did for Pathfinder - it wasn't the mindscape of a slumbering creature but more... a super powerful creature altered the entire party's perception of reality over the entire course of the questline, and when it was done, it turned out things were totally not what they seemed and what we thought we were doing was actually something else entirely o_O
At first I thought this was a water dragon, and was like a wyvern. Though ana quatic topaz wyvern so it would swim around in the water like a penguin, or a torpedo. Using the magic to lesson the water resistance around it.
Then I made the image bigger and I saw the arms in the image. Looking very regal with his magic in hand, his nice oriental beard. and the ornate looking sails instead of a main. Idea just struck me. It is master of magic so it can turn into my first thought of what it is. ANd when it casts a spell would it reflect off those shiny wings. SO everyone has to make a check to see if they are blinded and if someone fails that person things the dragons behind them

Your mentioning swimming like a penguin or torpedo made me miss swimming in lakes. Also it's camping season and I'm in the UK where the type of camping we're used to isn't really a thing >_O
Thanks! And yes, I could definitely see him having lots of frustrating magic reflection/counterspelling abilities >_O and fairly disorienting mental tricks keeping the party confused and off its game. Thankfully, though, I see this dragon not being particularly aggressive or evil, although I could definitely see him being grumpy if you disturb his meditations!
