This is Viridia. Yeah, uncreative name is uncreative. >.-.>
She was inspired by the Dragon Champion books. If there's anyone who has not read these books, I reccommend them. I thoroughly enjoyed the last three I read. :) I'll eventually get to the fourth book. There needs to be more books like this one, being able to see the world though dragons' eyes... Or maybe books through other creatures' eyes, like gryphons, or...some other things....yeah.
I find it interesting that all the female dragons are green, while the males are every other colour. At first I used to balk at the idea of females only being green while all the males get the pretty shiny colours. Now it doesn't bother me. In fact, it makes me look at old medieval drawings (and some fantasy book covers) in a different light. :P You ever see a picture of a knight fighting a green dragon? How do you know that it might be a female dragon protecting her precious eggs/hatchlings? ;)
Anyways, this is Viridia. She will be representing my dark, depressive and submissive side. (Just like how Derkesthai represents my dominant, angry, stubborn side)
Even though StarSeeker is my main persona who holds all these certain emotions, both positive and negative, I wanted to make seperate characters for certain emotions I have. I probably should've mentioned that when I first made Derkesthai (which, btw, I need to redraw the ol' boy..).
She has a little bit of a past. Her family was raised with humans. She doesn't know her parents, but does know her siblings. She has two other sisters and her Champion brother. Her sisters were very pretty (at least to her). The older one had scales that looked like oversized emeralds, and her eyes as bright as the gold she would eat. Her younger sister was lighter shade of green, like a bright green apple. A slight yellowish tint, but this didn't make her unattractive. Their brother was a strong fellow (he'd have to, otherwise he would've been eaten by his brothers), with predominately deep blue scales, hinted a slight sheen of purple. Because of his dark colour his eyes were very bright, almost brass in colour. He is kind and protective of his sisters, but he knows where his duties lie when it comes to his superiors.
Then there's Viridia. She came out different (*sniff sniff* Do I smell a Mary-Sue? lol, I dunno :P). She does not consider herself as beautiful as her sisters, and rightly so. Her scales are very dull and dark (not at all matching her name, which came from the colour viridian), and her eyes a dull jasmine yellow. It doesn't matter how much gold, silver and other metals her human care-takers give her, her scales will continue to be a murky green colour. While she may have some brighter green tints in other places, her scales will continue to look as if she were constantly swimming in a swamp. Some question if she's really a fire-breathing crocodile with wings...
While her siblings don't look at her any differently, others do. She's heard comments that her neck is blunt and short, her tail equally so. That she is also small for her age, that she shouldn't have sprouted her wings so early, that maybe she forced them out. That she so cow-like anyone can bend her against whatever will she has left. This has led to a lot of harrassment, as well as psychological (and some physical) abuse. Because of this, she has become very insecure, and eventually very depressed and submissive.
She has no mate or family of her very own, mostly because of her unattractive colour and pitiful state.
Despite all this, she has narrow wings which are perfect for diving and flying at very fast speeds. That is, if she builds enough willpower to fly. Her brother discovered that she is very intelligent (more intelligent than her sisters, who think it more important to clean their scales, gossip, and flirt with the males), and has taught her a few combat tricks, specifically how to fight with a long spear and stealth (which she'd be good at in a forest with her drab colours). When traveling instead of fighting, she's used like a packhorse.
It seems that combat gets her a little out of her shell (because she noticed her colours go from being an eyesore to useful), but like mentioned earlier, she can have her will bent very easily. She doesn't think for herself very much, nor does she seem to care that much. The neck strap/leash has been on her since she was a wingless hatchling. It's like a security blanket for her, and she refuses to take it off, except if a human needs to replace it or clean it.
---
Augh, I hope some of you can see that she has some brown in her scales, noteably the smaller scales lining the belly plates. It seems the scanner didn't pick it up that well.
And please excuse the craptacular and questionable "background." I put a picture underneath the paper so any other drawing wouldn't appear on this drawing.
I'm not liking her arms. I probably shouldn't have had them connect to her wings.

That's certainly a lot of back story there. Her dull green color makes for a good camouflage indeed. Too bad she is so shy. Maybe she needs a good friend to open her up.
I used to read tons of books and would got to the the library a lot. I typically looked for books with dragons in them. Unfortunately, almost every book with a dragon on the cover or in the title treats dragons as props. It is very rare when a dragon is a main character. One of the few is the Battle Dragon series. I never finished reading the whole set but I loved the ones I had.

Yeeaahh, I try and shorten these things, but when I make characters of my own, I tend to add A LOT of history and personality. D:
Despite how much I love books (I have at least 3 large bookcases, all full except for the largest one, which is only half full), I'm pretty picky. If I find a dragon book, I wanna make sure the dragon isn't only there for killing purposes, or it's just a dumb beast bent on evil/destruction/revenge. I also like a dragon book where the author at least TRIES to describe a little of what the dragon looks like. I've found some where the dragon is horribly detailed (saying stuff that it's a big, dark, snarly dragon) to some that are wonderfully detailed (like the ones in the Dragon Jouster series. Some sound so exotic with their colours, I must try and draw them! Especially Kashet. He's a beauty).
You ever read the Temeraire series? While it's not based through the dragon's point of view, I really like this series cuz it's a mix of the Napoleonic Wars mixed with dragons. :D And the dragons all have their unique personalities, and come in different, yet colourful breeds. I would like to draw a few of the characters.

It's been a long long times since I had a good read. My free time evaporated in the wind. Plus some real life issues got in the way. But back then, I used to read something almost every day. Some from the library with a lot from web story sites like the old Mia story archive (I wonder if it still exists).
I have been interested in dragons almost all my life. But the stoty that real awaken my dragon within me is a series by M. H. Glenn called he Steel Dragon Saga. It is still at http://pws.prserv.net/hasai/ but haven't been updated in a long time. Still my favorite though.
Another favorite is the battledragon books by Christopher B. Rowley. I also like the dragon character in the earlier Sword of Truth books. Took bad she not used in the later ones (well, to the point I stopped reading as she could have returned). She's the kind of dragon I would love to meet.
I read tons of other stuff but those stuck in my mind. The only others I can recall is elvenbane and even though not a dragon, the White Gryphon and Black Gryphon books as well. A few more but I can't remember the titles.
Yeah, I have characters with huge back story too. If I wasn't so lazy, I would have writen a few novels by now.
BTW, I read a few of the Dungeons and Dragon's books and found barely any dragons in them. The stories are ok but the lack of something making up half the title made me a bit disappointed. What a tease.

Age of Fire series is wonderful. Go get book four ASAP, it's rather exciting. Agree with you on the need for more books with dragons as actual main characters (and not flying plot devices like in crap like Inheritance); there's only one or two others books/series I know of that actually give dragons the spotlight.
As for the background, I think she'd only be a Mary Sue if she angsts about her problems a lot. :P And those arms look funny to me more because of the width of the upper arm than because they go right into the wings. A slimmer, more catlike upper arm probably would have worked better.

Heh, I actually have the book, but I can't read it yet. :P I'm already reading three other books at the moment (one of them is from the Temeraire series).
Unfortunately I do like reading the Inheritance books. ^.-.^;; I do agree with you though, with treating the dragons like flying plot devices... And I don't exactly care for Saphira acting high and mighty a lot either. And yet for some reason I went off and bought the third book and read it...
Lol, no she doesn't complain too much about her problems. :P I'm sure she'd be more Mary Sue-ish if say she was the youngest of her siblings. That I wanted to stay away from. And the whole "*sigh* Leave me alone... *crycrywristcut*"
Yeah, I knew the moment I inked the scales in her forearms that something didn't look right. They look so...fat. DX Ugh. So maybe next time I draw her I'll definately slim down those forearms (and since their wings sprout from their back upon maturity, I'll hafta make sure not to connect them to her shoulder blades/arms). Thanks for the advice! :D Always appreciated.

The action in many places felt very contrived, especially in the "connections" that AuRon makes, and the writing itself felt bland and uninspired in many places.
Also, his usage of "Dragon language" felt forced, as if he was trying to give a greater feeling of depth to his world through it's use, and yet it seemed weaker each time he used it.
Overall the biggest reason I have in not liking the "Age of Fire" series is that the author's style of writing just doesn't strike me as something I want to read. This is of course a matter of personal taste, since just about every other Dragon I know likes his work, while to me it just seems amateurish.
It's really just personal opinion.

Ah, I see. I also don't like the use of different languages (cuz then I hafta go to the back of the book and find the translation, when I REALLY wanna read the book). Seems like a waste of time, similar to the Inheritence books (which I also like, apparently).
Well, I'm glad to see your opinion on the series. :) I wasn't about to try and force you to enjoy the books, it's just my own curiosity wanting to know, is all. :P Damn curiosity...surprised it hasn't killed me yet. lol
