The Battle of Praft was over before it was ever joined. The Emerald Legion, betrayed by faulty intelligence, had sent a mere three battalions to pacify a megalopolis which, instead of the reported few thousand Publican troublemakers, was infested with nearly three million drones of the Consuming Hegemony.
The dropships were taken first, overrun and destroyed before two of them were able to even take off. The third made it to low orbit before being eaten apart, sending the partial distress signal which was the only communication from the surface for the duration of the battle. The remaining two and a half battalions were alone in the city, being broken into smaller and smaller groups as positions were overrun and fighting units were split apart and forced into boltholes.
It was over 96 hours before the Empire received, deciphered, and mobilized forces for a response.
When the Fifth Legion's Sterilization Fleet arrived, only 251 of the original 2,250 combat troops were still alive. Of the officers and support staff, only a half dozen of the Emerald Legion's engineers and one very stubborn Captain remained. Against protocol and orders (see Court Martial proceedings F-1204773), Lord Commander Gregorius immediately dispatched the whole of his ground forces to recover the survivors before sterilizing the planet.
Of the nearly 10,000 troops which set foot upon Praft C, less than four thousand survived. Of the original deployment of the Emerald Legion, only 62. Among them were a brother and sister pair of legionaries, found fighting from a bolt hole carved from the wreckage of a civilian cargo transport. According to after action reports, they not only refused to take the initial evacuation transports, they were instrumental in locating and extracting the remaining survivors of their battalion.
Legionary T. Fischer and S. Fischer received the Star Accord of Valor for their actions upon the planet. T. Fischer went on to command several successful incursions against the Consuming Hegemony, and is currently Lord Commander of his Legion. S. Fischer suffered a serious wound in later actions against the Val-Ger-Kot-Kol, and serves as Liason to the Empress' household for the Legions, and Kouropalates to the Emperor's third son.
