Endless Realms bestiary - Amber Dragon
Bestiary artwork for Endless Realms, a D&D-like "pen and paper" fantasy RPG I'm working for.
Amber - protection and courage in battle, turns negative energy to positive, powerful healer
Differing from other dragon concepts in the game so far, this dragon isn't a demigod or avatar of a particular elemental or cosmic force. For the gemstone dragons, I was given almost entirely free reign, so I decided to take inspiration from historical and pagan lore.
I hadn't done a more mammalian dragon design yet, so I thought amber was suiting for its warm, soft qualities - if he looks vaguely familiar, it's because his design was largely based off my earlier beastie sketch here.

You mean sort of like http://www.furaffinity.net/view/13484730/ ? Not quite the same, I know, but pretty darn close :b
Sooooo do baby Amber dragons come from trees? Since they are the strong healers and in other games like WOW you can turn into a tree to heal people. Plus Amber is tree sap. So while in the middle of a battle a large Amber tree sprouts up from the dragon and heals all of its allies. Then when it's done healing into turns back and lets out a mighty roar to help boost moral or something like that. Reminds me slightly of a lion so I wouldn't want to meet this one on the savanna.
Haha, I'm not sure. I wasn't given any direction at all for gemstone dragons, where they come from, or what they're like, other than "make them pretty but they don't have to be made totally from the gemstone, just themed/inspired around them." So I've been operating under them sharing a number of qualities with the gemstones, but without necessarily making them literally 100% out of the material (I thought that might be a bit artistically limiting and get a bit tiresome, since there were over a dozen I needed to do).
That being said, I could definitely see them having some sort of power or relation to trees, or maybe it's simply how their healing power works: a kind of quickened "regrowth" or regenerative ability. Or since amber is sort of the hardened "blood" of trees, perhaps the Amber dragon's blood itself has healing properties? Like a magical salve of sorts?
