_____Concept Contest_____
This is a character concept contest, meaning that the idea behind the character and how well that idea is conveyed through art and/or writing will be the deciding factors in which concepts win! April's Beast of the Month is the Peryton, so this contest will be an exploration of Peryton design and lore!
Prizes include free art and custom fawns of winning concepts! Read-on for more info!
_____General Rules_____
3 entries per person.
Entries due by May 9th.
You may only enter art or writing created yourself.
Keep it tasteful. Artistic nudes and implied written content is fine, but nothing explicit, please.
Written entries for bought designs are allowed, but will only be treated as a written concept entry.
Visual entries must be no larger than 1280px x 1280px, but can be whatever you think best conveys your concept (sketches, a painting, sequential art, character sheet, etc.). So long as it fits within those pixels.
Written entries should be no longer than 1000 words, but doesn't have to be very long at all. Sometimes less is more. Written entries can be poetry or prose; a brief, insightful glimpse into the character's mind; a whole back-story; a combination of these; or anything else you can think to write that makes your concept come to life in less than 1000 words!
_____Peryton Requirements_____
Concept must be part bird, part deer-esque creature. And by deer-esque, it should at least vaguely resemble a deer. Like a goat or cow. Or a deer made to resemble such a creature would be fine. Just don't get confused and design a gryphon by mistake, ohnoes!
Your bird/deer combo does not have to fit classic interpretation of such a hybrid. Give it a deer butt and bird face, if you want!
Character's written concept doesn't have to strictly follow lore, but try to incorporate something of it into the story. Feel free to come-up with your own, unique twist on the theme! For lore info, you can check the brief submission description here: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/19696089/

With this contest, it is my intention to foster creative storytelling; invested character design; and to encourage folks to push their boundaries! Some folks are more comfortable making art, some writing. Some folks are great at both. Whatever your strengths, I hope everyone makes an attempt at both, if only to try. And don't forget to have fun with your concepts! Winners will be chosen on strength of concept, not necessarily technical skill (though that tends to help communicate concept).

First Place, Overall Concept
One first-place winner will be chosen for awesome overall visual and written design. Only entries with art and a written concept will be first-place eligible. First-place will receive both a Derp Doodle (or Gesture*) of their Peryton, and a custom Fawn version of their character using the base shown above.
(*Derp Doodle is the default, but if at least ten people enter the contest, I will upgrade the Derp to a Gesture.)
Runner-up, Written Concept
One winner will be chosen for awesome written concept, no art required. Runner-up may choose to receive a custom Fawn version of their character using the base shown above or a Derp Doodle of their Peryton.

If you want to use the design you bought, it would have to be for the Written Entry, only. If you want to include art to help illustrate the written portion of an entry (story/personality), I'd love to see it, but because the visual aspects of the character were not designed by you, I cannot include it when considering the art-based awards.
It isn't my ideal way of running the contest, but it is currently the only way I can think of to make it fair in a concept contest (as opposed to an art contest). I hope in the future I might find a better way to run things. Maybe by figuring another way to organize prizes and categories, or running a second contest specifically for design buyers.

May 9th is technically the last day to submit entries. I realize timezones make the deadline a bit blurry, but I'm not really concerned about setting a specific time. I probably won't announce winners until the 13th at the very earliest, so if if it is May 10th for me when you get your entry in, that's fine. It might still be the 9th somewhere on Earth, lol.

You've definitely got me interest in this species now. It's sparked several ideas I'd like to bring to life. But I'll be leaving on vacation in a little over a week and there's no way I'll get anything done in that timespan. Bummer.
