Edom the Mosquito walked along, his hands twitching as he patted his empty pockets. Normally he carried his twin pistols, Ruby and Emerald, tucked safety withing the confines of his coat, ready for use, but today the bounty hunter found himself without his trusty weapons.
"Well, well. If it isn't The Devil Who Never Cried."
Edom glanced up at the sound of the voice, and spied a figure emerging from the shadows of an alley. A white squirrel, her fur and hair splashed with red and blue, and a backpack slung over her shoulder, winked at the mosquito, and Edom nodded in acknowledgement.
"Crystspark," he said. "Been waiting long?"
The squirrel shook her head.
"Only just got here myself," she replied.
Crystspark glanced down, noticing the twitch in Edom's fingers and chuckled.
"Feeling a bit anxious without your toys?" she teased.
Edom shrugged and chewed on the matchstick in his mouth. Crystspark smiled. The squirrel took of the backpack and tossed it to Edom.
"This should ease your mind, Vampire," Crystspark said, using Edom's nickname.
Edom looked in the pack, retrieving a carved wooden box. Slowly he opened it. Set snugly within a plush velvet lining he saw his pistols, polished and ready for use. A slight smile crossed Edom's normally stoic face.
"They look great, Crystspark," he said. "Thank you."
Crystspark nodded and gave her friend and co-worker a punch on the arm.
"Told you the repairs would make them look better than new. Plus I managed to arrange for them to be consecrated with blessed oil for when we next have to hunt demons."
Edom slipped the pistols into his coat, the reassuring feeling of their weight giving him a sense of comfort. He looked at Crystspark, silent understanding passing between the two friends. A new voice cut through the air, and the pair looked over to the source.
"This is all very touching, but I suggest it's time we got to work..."
A shadowy figure seemed to materialize, the entity known as Dante making his presence felt.
"So if you're both finished, we have a long day ahead of us."
Crystspak laughed, refusing to allow Dante's demeanor ruin the moment between herself and Edom, and together the trio moved off. Edom took a deep breath. With Crystspak and Dante by his side the mosquito knew, no bounty would ever escape their clutches...
