Couch Kitties: Gender Stuck In Neutral...
http://hotair.com/archives/2016/04/.....ender-neutral/
As it turns out, however, the cats are in no danger and I needn’t have worried. Taylor isn’t spending her time trying to force her female cats into tuxedos or offering them gender specific litter boxes and badgering them to use the one for the Tomcats. This was all an exercise in training herself to refer to the cats in “gender neutral” terms with the awkward and broken pronouns that always entails. And speaking as a lifelong cat owner, I can assure you that the cats aren’t paying any attention and really don’t care. (I can’t even get mine to come when I call them more than two out of five times unless I’m opening a can of tuna.)
Tali and Zeph don't bother either; they have plenty of gender-neutral descriptives for Sylvia and Norma anyway...

It's especially bothersome when "gender inclusive language" creeps into religious services and music. No footnotes to indicate any change was made, it just occurs and is accepted like it's Gospel. Gotta please those "Christian Feminists" or they'll storm out of church.
Me, I just sing the original verse--loud and bold--while the sheeples "us" and "all" their way along.

Well, fascinating exercise if nothing else. If I still had pets it might be an interesting thing to try. It helps highlight some of the frayed seams in English. In general it's good we're not a gendered language, but gendered languages tend to have purpose-built (ie: non-awkward) neutral terms.
I'm waiting on the new journal publications. I'm hearing they're getting interesting results from the MRI work. But beyond waiting for the publications I'm not that inclined to just call random strangers liars. It's not my way and it feels modestly unfair. I may be wrong. I think you have certain insights that I lack and so may be in the right in this case. Categories for personal identification are always arbitrary and put on by the people that are that thing. Mexicans didn't exist until there was such a nation. Americans didn't either and now there are complex lists of what an American feels like and is in their heart. The same with religious identities that folk claim are real. And those are intangibles, not (potentially; again, waiting on peer review) biological vagaries. At the very least, do you accept terms for intersex individuals? Intersexuality with actual physical presentation exists. I know of one partial hermaphrodite personally.
I admire your passion but wish it was tempered with compassion. You seem decent but rash. I'm not saying it's a bad method for maintaining a position but it may become counterproductive in the future. Or might not, I don't know.

Intersex is real, though rare, and I do not object to a gender term for it. (Although it would help if a single variant was accepted, rather than half a dozen competing terms.) Overall, though, I tend to remain in the realm of real. Plumbing defines pronoun, and certainly defines which bathroom you should be using. In general, the universe is not 'fair' nor does it give a darn about an individual's 'sensitivities'. Most people who complain about such things need to have thicker skin.
The universe is not, yes. That is absolutely true. But humans are not universes. We are the only ones who demarcate fair and unfair between humans. Even if you wantto take this to scientific terms, we learn more about what it means to be a human and how things work. I'll pass on mentioning past categories, but mention we are getting better at refined classification through evidence-based means. Now I'm a humanist, so I am actually looser than that when it comes to giving dignity and respect to others but I recognize some are more rigid so I try to keep public criteria in as narrow a box as possible. So again, I'll pass on cultural conceptions of gender vs sex, including third genders and such. I don't have a dog in the fight so I am far from someone who should be making statements. Why the hell do I care about bathrooms? I care more about them having toilet paper and clean floors than which one is being used by any particular person. What really bakes my noodle is that I usually see this in a fundamentalist context. Given where you are commenting I'm willing to guess you're an agnostic libertarian. You keep strange bedfellows.
Very good analysis. That is pretty close to exactly what my views are based on. Although I sometimes list my religion as Militant Agnostic. (I don't know, and you don't know either. Faith =/= Knowledge. So stop claiming yours does.)
I have no problem with granting people default respect; it makes a good starting point for dealing with other people. I have a problem with the ones who will decry an honest attempt at respect if it doesn't cater to their Special Snowflake desires. Making up weird pronouns and screeching like a demented monkey when someone doesn't read their mind to know how they want to be referred to? That loses my respect extremely rapidly. Denying that objective facts exist because they're somehow unfair? Even faster.

I can see that, mostly because I prefer to bow out rather than persist with ano argument that could turn rancorous and that will not change anything. I don't argue with the entrenched; I leave that to sterner folks. I try to at least foster some peace. I recognize nothing will change. But it was good to speak with you.
