354 – Baba Yaga
Baba Yaga is an old, child-eating hag that lives in a cottage on chicken’s legs deep in the dark forests of Russia. Her house is surrounded by a piked fence decorated in human skulls — and there’s always room for one more. Few children who seek out Baba Yaga ever return, but one girl, named Vasilisa the Beautiful, was able to trick the old crone into letting her escape. Baba Yaga travels in a flying mortar and pestle.

Fast forward to 51:00. Because the character's name was dubbed into something lame, Joel educated me on who that was.

Goes back to Russian folk lore, of course, brought into modern times via some paintings, an artist's death, and some music written around his memorial exhibition:

The Baba Yaga mythic image obviously regards an old woman living on the outskirts of a village because she continues to practice "the old ways" rather than whatever passes as modern religion etc - along with the old ways are traditional shamanistic and herbal remedies - hence the mortar and pestle. The hut on fowls legs because such recluses kept fowls for eggs, were smart enough to keep moving so that only those who wanted their medicines etc could find them. Eating children - the same old witch scare. The really demonic folks were the preachers calling for witches to be burned....
But monsters are pretty damn cool when the norm is hypocritical and sycophantic evil...
