SERVICE HISTORY:
In the 2280s the United Federation of Planets was seeing increasing hostile activity from different sectors from Orion Pirate incursions to skirmishes with the Klingon Empire. In bolster their fleet, they began designing a frigate class dedicated to having more firepower than on standard classes like the Constitution or Miranda class starships. Designed in 2279, what would become the Daniel Hood class was built to have multiple torpedo launchers as a long-range tactical starship whose primary mission would be to either bolster defenses of border outposts or serve as escorts for large convoys. Despite protest within Starfleet Command about the military nature of this design, it was finally approved in 2281 with an initial order of 3 starships.
The first starship, the USS Daniel Hood, was named after a 21st century novelist, was launched on 2285, a few months after the Genesis Incident. Under the command of Captain Sarah Duvalier, the Hood was dispatched to Starbase 76 at Davlos III which was both near the Orion Nebula and the Klingon Neutral Zone. Most of its duty there was quiet outside of assisting with experiments , with the exception of battling 2 Orion pirate friagtes in 2288. In 2289 it was assigned to escort Ambassador Curzon Dax to initiate negotiations with the Klingon Empire that’ll blossom to the Khitomer Conference in 2293. It was Dax’s main ship until the end of the peace conference.
2317, under the command of Commander Fritz Becker, the Hood was part of a convoy heading to New Brooklyn when it was set upon by 3 Romulan warbirds. USS Daniel Hood, her sister ship the Themistocles, and various Miranda class ships. Despite taking heavy damage the Hood destroyed 1 Warbird with a full torpedo spread and the Emden destroyed another warbird. Afterwards it was communicated that the Romulan Centurion gone mad and took his squadron beyond the Neutral Zone; both the Federation and Romulan Star Empire did not escalate hositilies and the later severely punished the Centurion for insubordination.
After extensive repairs, the ship continued in service until 2349 when it was destroyed in the Federation-Cardassian War.
The second, USS James E. Kyes, was scheduled to launch a month after the Hood, but safety accidents and a broken impulse engine delayed it for another year. Under the command of Commander Milo Kasun, the Kyes was assigned to the Romulan Neutral Zone. In 2287 the crew was assigned to deal with a deadly epidemic on Hekaras and in 2289, the ship had been towed to Starbase 58 after main power was lost due to an unknown computer virus.
The Kyes served through the post-Khitomer period until it was decommissioned in 2331 and scrapped.
USS Themistocles was the third and longest serving of the class. Launched in 2287 under the command of Captain Karen Adams, it was assigned to the Romulan DMZ and made its home base at Starbase 23. It distinguished itself in 2302 when it assisted in the evacuation of Glissa II after an asteroid was close to colliding with the planet. It was involved in several skirmishes and bizarre subspace anomalies throughout the years, including in the Federation-Cardassian War and the Galen Border Conflicts. It was scheduled to be decommissioned in 2367, but it was destroyed along with 38 other starships at the Battle of Wolf 359 with only 30 survivors escaping through escape pods.
