It's very important that birds keep this gland clean because when cleaning themselves, they use the secretions from this gland and spread it all over their feathers, and when this stuff on their feathers reacts to sunshine, it produces protein [I think that's what it was, I'm not sure, some kind of vitamin] that he ingests when he nibbles his feathers.
